Beane was one of the first baseball players to come out as gay.  He was named an ambassador for diversity for professional baseball in 2014.  He was well respected and appreciated in the professional baseball community.  An interesting autobiography Going the Other Way a Life In and Out of Baseball is an interesting take on gay life in sports in the 80s and 90s.

Right person, wrong spelling.

Beane is the A's executive known for Moneyball.

Billy Bean is the one who died.

Correction:
Bean was one of the first EX-baseball players to come out as gay. To date, NO active MLB player has come out as gay. A few, like Bean did, but only after they retired.... when it was safe.

Bean was a very handsome, intelligent, and talented athlete.. Here is a clip of him on the panel of the All-Gay version of the 50's game show, "I've Got a Secret". Martha Wash (from the Weather Girls - It's Raining Men) was a Mystery Guest on the show.

Bean admitted later that he had no idea who Martha Wash was. The only one of the gay panelists who never heard of her.

Martha was also part of an earlier duo with her friend, Betty Spray.  'Spray & Wash' were very popular on the all-night laundromat circuit for awhile in the 70s.

Billy Beane was also a very handsome, intelligent, and talented athlete...

@samhexum those photos you posted ARE NOT Billy Bean, the gay athlete, and topic of this thread.
Those pics are Billy Beane, a straight ex-MLB player and current executive with the Oakland Athletics, who is very much alive.

Notice the difference in the spelling (Beane vs. Bean).

Sorry about the confusion i thought they both spelled it the same way.  The straight Billy Beane was the "mastermind" behind Moneyball.   I thought the gay Billy Bean came out when he was returned to the minor leagues but p0erhaps he did so as he retired.

@BOZO T CLOWN, notice that I wrote ALSO.  @purplekow wrote that Billy Beane had died and that he was a good looking former athlete.  I corrected him about the deceased and informed him about the other.

Apparently there was a lot of confusion over which Billy Bean(e) actually died.
Even Sirius Radio sportscaster Chris Mad Dog Russo got his beans mixed up.

The famous host made a regrettable error.

Moral of the story - If you are raising your son to be a baseball player, and your last name is Bean(e), don't name him Billy.
Here are a few suggestions: Lima, Pinto, Kidney, Jelly, or Garbonzo.

The Yankees had a moment of silence for Billy Bean tonight. It would've been really awkward if they actually had it for Billy Beane.
