Tipping $20–$30 for a 2hr. massage is already low. Some therapists here have even received just $15 for 2hr.One client comes in monthly and rotates between therapists.

Not sure if the spa can refuse clients like this, but I feel bad for them.

Yikes.

If the massage is substandard, a small tip is understandable. If it’s good, I do 25%. If extras are exceptional I raise the tab to an escort rate, which has happened here once (and will again).

I always take into account the time and effort that is put into a massage, with or without any extras. As a matter of fact I never go expecting extras, I just go with the expectation of having a solid massage and whatever happens beyond that happens.

Instead of trying to figure out an amount to tip, I always come prepared to give $100/60 min, $150/90 min, and $200/120 min no matter what. I think this is reasonable for the service they're delivering, and it's still less than what alot of independent MT's ask for on MassuerFinder or RentMassuer. I've never had a complaint or received any attitude about my tip, if anything they express alot of gratitude and I tend to get excellent services whenever I see them again.

while I agree with much of your response, your statement, “especially if there are extras involved, you should tip them even more.” The tips you recommended based on time of appointment don’t reflect an appropriate tip for basic service with no extras, at least based on the starting price. The issue lies in the starting price. The owner or therapists set their starting price very low compared to normal RM rates, and they are taking a risk setting that price so low, that they’re likely going to get customers who see a deal and want to jump on it or attract patrons who normally can’t afford a massage that we all enjoy. That’s a risk that they are taking and they should understand that and be okay with it. If they are not, and they get offended when tips are on the low end, they should increase their prices where they won’t be offended if they get a smaller tip. 
 

With that said, I’ve also had many massages with providers on RM, and understand the value that I get when going to TWS. 

I’ve had 2 90-min massages with therapist where no extras were involved, and I tipped $50. 
 

I’ve had many more “special” 90-Min massages with therapists and I tipped $100 or more. Especially since the therapists at TWS actually give a better therapeutic massages than most on RM or MF. While many aren’t formally trained, they do learn quickly and get markedly better with time. Even at a $200 all-in price point, I think most of can agree that is a steal. 
 

I’ll be heading over there tomorrow and am looking forward to another great massage. 

I get the pricing point,it is on the lower side but comparing it directly to RM isn’t really fair. Most RM therapists work independently, have private rooms, and can offer more flexibility, which is why their rates are higher.

TWS is a spa, so their pricing has to stay in line with other spas (and it’s still cheaper than many). Plus, their clientele is broader,last time I was there, I saw an older couple and a few women waiting too.

That said, I do agree they could raise prices a bit so therapists can earn more and things feel more balanced.

There are pluses and minuses to each setting. As you mentioned, more flexibility and a more private setting are definitely a plus. I would also argue, thoigh, at TWS, you get less (or even none) cancellations, late starts, getting shorted on time. You also get hot towels and often times extras go above and beyond RM norms. 
 

With that said, I had an awesome 90-minute massage with Kenneth yesterday. I’d say he is the most technically sound therapist at TWS in terms of Thai (stretching and all) and deep tissue bodywork. Highly recommend him for that type of massage.

I’ve had a session with him before. I agree he’s very skilled in Thai massage, and his pressure is excellent. However, he really needs to give a heads-up before stretching or adjusting the client’s body. At one point, he suddenly twisted my leg quickly and forcefully, which felt unsafe. Even after I told him to stop, he kept doing it and just said, “Ok, ok, good, good.”

What made me even more uncomfortable was that he asked a lot of inappropriate personal questions. Then he leaned in very close and whispered, in a strange tone, “You’re so cute.” He even directly asked, “Do you want to do me or do you want me to do you?which was completely out of line.

After that, I tried Oliver, and he was excellent (he’s now one of my favorites, along with Nathan). I also sent a friend to try Kenneth, and they had a very similar experience.

Ive been to Oliver several times the past couple of years. Saw him again recently, he is consistently better each visit
