I barely made it through the first season of Will & Grace. Some funny one-liners delivered by annoying, predictable unappealing characters. Hence, I never saw Leslie Jordan on that or any other series I can recall. However, when I did see him, or hear hime being interviewed, I always found him funny. I get the point about playing to a stereotype but I have happy memories of the attention I received at the first gay bars I visited by admittedly older patrons. They included: Napoleon, an eccentric piano bar in Boston's Bay Village; Mr. P's in D.C.; and until not too long ago, Martini's in San Diego. They were full of his type.

I loved Will & Grace.  I also believe that it did a lot to change America to a gay friendly bias.  But I can only know that it made me more accepting of gay people. While I’m sure the stereotypical “Jack” was what many thought of as “gay,” the struggles of the more mainstream “Will” living in two worlds where he wasn’t completely free to be himself either way, created a view that many Americans could relate to.  Leslie Jordan fit into that filling in the blank - the old guy that had the secret that everyone “knew”.  Frankly, I think the show was genius.

Interesting story that Leslie and Megan Mullally tell about his role as Beverly Leslie on Will & Grace. The role was originally written for Joan Collins, who had accepted the role. However, she balked at the fight scene around the billiard table due to each character pulling the other's wig off. "Miss Collins apparently didn't want her wig jerked off," so she didn't show up for the table read and when it was apparent she wasn't coming in, one of the show's creators/executive producers "went ballistic and decided to recast." There's a little more to how Leslie got the role at his audition, and a lot more fun stories in this video where Megan interviews him for the Library of Congress 2022 National Book Festival.
