Question for traveling providers: How do you keep that in check?

Hey awesome people!

I'm starting this topic after my friend's call about a bug he caught with a traveling provider. He did use a condom for anal sex, but got a throat gonorrhea after a bj (I swear it's an actual friend, not me lol). Now, for him it's about 2 weeks of self-indulging practices with porn. And a bit of the trauma, because he's very hygienic and a bit of a germaphobe (to a healthy degree).

So the question is: How do you keep your health in check while you're traveling? How do you do health check-ups while you're on the road for more that a few days?

I know there's prep and probably someone also takes antibiotics just to be sure, but it's a damage to your liver if you do that regularly.

I appreciate your answer.

-Cranberry supplements or juice (preferably the 100% with no sugar added ones. Promotes urinary health)

-urinate/shower after sex

-mouthwash before/after oral with back of throat gargle

-work penis forward and check for discharge

-limit or exclude BB activities with partners/clients if in doubt

-get tested if any sign of burning/pain/discharge

How easy is it to get STI tested when you are on the road?

About as easy as getting tested at home. Very easy.

Did not know that. I thought you need a doctor’s referral or such to get STI/HIV tests, plus waiting for several days for a result (which is the worst part, not knowing and waiting). Good to know. Thanks!

Yeah they sell at home test kits now for everything. Although they recommend going to a doctor to confirm a positive.

I am not aware of any test for gonorrhea that gives instant results. Like HIV and other stds they require laboratory analysis which takes days to complete. You can go into any clinic here in Canada but might have to make an appointment, especially in smaller centers where they don't operate 5 days a week.

So the question is what provider will do while waiting for the results? If seeing other clients and wearing the condom, there’s still a chance of transmitting STI because chances are low one would wear a condom during BJ etc.

If you read the instructions on at home tests for Stds you have to send away your samples to be tested. I take it the whole point is to avoid having to go to a clinic where some people might feel embarrassed being seen. If you test positive you then need to either see a doctor or a health care provider like a nurse practitioner for treatment.

As a client, I expect a provider to contact me if he finds he has contracted an Std after seeing me and other clients in the same timeframe so I can go and get tested. The best ones do.

My friend wasn’t notified by provider and had other sexual contacts for couple of weeks, giving STI to all unknowingly. Got regularly tested and had to call everyone and give a notice. During phone call, provider admitted that he tested positive but during this 10 days waiting for results had several clients, including my friend.

Interesting..   I assume the provider was symptomatic and thus the reason for getting tested.  I think if I were symptomatic I would refrain from sex until I had the results..

You misquoted me. That was another poster who said that.

You do need a doctor's referral. They are easy to get. Where I live, in Vancouver, it can be requisitioned instantly and discreetly online and taken to a lab ASAP. Yes, you will  likely wait several days for your results. If you are getting tested because a partner tested positive for something, medical pros will advice you to abstain until you get your results.

A few quick google searches will explain all this and much, much more. None of it is particularly specific to travelling sex workers.

I am connected with MyChart: it’s an online health network that many hospitals/clinics now use. I can usually see my lab results the next morning after any test.

There’s also your “city/metro” health clinics in many areas to get a free or low cost exam.

Also, some places will treat you if you have symptoms, before awaiting test results.

I wonder who this provider is? Sounded like he wasn’t being very mindful with his big dick.

That's not the case in Ontario. You can just go to a walk-in clinic. I'm  surprised about BC.

Here there is a shortage of doctors and not everyone has one. But I used to live in Quebec and they have walk-in std clinics as well.

I'm not sure I understand where the difference is. You can go to any walk-in clinic for the referral here in BC as well, or to a sexual health pop-up clinic as you mentioned. In any of these cases, though, and with the online option as well, you're still getting a doctor's referral. Do you mean that a nurse practitioner can sign off on it in Ontario, or were you specifically envisioning a  family GP?

I have a family practitioner and have had him for over 20 years. I ended up with him after my gay doctor died at a young age and his practice was distributed to 4 doctors, none of whom were gay.

He knows I am gay but I have always felt that he didn't have the same rapport with me as my old doctor did. So I go to a health clinic for my std checkups.

Now I always just deal with a nurse, who has recently retired so I haven't met her replacement. But she is the one I make an appointment with and she tests me and has once treated me for gonorrhea of the throat. Whether she confers with a doctor I have no idea but I don't need to see the doctor for a referral.
