How does someone with so much talent and money end up being such a jerk?

And he looks horrible for his age, too. I'm older than he is, but look a lot better. And I've definitely never been a sports jock. So sad to see someone fall so far.

Becker won Wimbledon at age 17. He was the first unseeded male player to win  Wimbledon. Perhaps too much, too soon

I was very lucky to see him play in Philadelphia, New York and Melbourne.

When you become the first world-famous sports figure in your home country at the age of 17, and that brings immediate wealth and adulation, which continues for years, it is not so surprising that you may develop a screwed up system of moral standards. His sex life is legendary: he married his first wife, actress Barbara Feltus, when she was 8 months pregnant, and has five acknowledged children, not all by his wives. Money has come easily, much of it not really "earned." Of course, if he had never won Wimbledon, he may still have turned out to be a jerk, but no one outside of his his small home town would have cared.

Because tennis players spend decades under the sun, they often don't age well.  Sun damage would hit a redhead like Becker particularly hard.  But yeah, whatever hard living he's done certainly doesn't help matters.  For contrast, look at the recent photo of clean-living Stefan Edberg, who's 1y10mo's older than Becker.

Becker earned twice as much in prize money as John McEnroe ($25 million to $12.5 million), yet McEnroe has a net worth of $100 million whereas Becker is bankrupt and headed to prison.  For so many get-rich-quick celebrities, managing money is a helluva lot harder than earning it.

He's a fuckup plain and simple! 

Many former sportsmen end up bankrupt but his attitude and deceiving behavior is unparallel.
