When I lived in Philadelphia, the only person I employed was a housecleaner (I worked fulltime). When I retired and moved to California, I had to give up that luxury, because I could afford a housecleaner OR people to look after the yard and the pool, and I had no expertise or desire to take care of either necessary chore, whereas I can clean my own small house.

My general rule is that I only tip people who have less money than I do.

>Can't you put a "No junk mail" notice on your mailbox?

No. Failure to deliver mail is considered tampering/fraud and letter carriers can lose their jobs over it.

On the other side of that coin, it's technically illegal for anyone to put anything other than actual postage-paid mail in your mailbox.

I always find tipping in the US a delicate problem.

How much is it; 5% ,10% 15%?? I always leave a restaurant fearing that the waiter is going to yell at me before all the patrons because the tipping was not enough

In Europe we never tip ; everything is included in the bill : taxes , the service charge .

The only person I tip at the end of the year is the postman because he is very helpfull and friendly.

In Japan tipping is an offense .

I like to use 10% of the bar bill + 15-20% of the food bill, if the service was good. If the service was superior I tend to use 25% of the food bill but still 10% of the bar bill.

I don't know the derivation of that formula but it seems to make sense in that how much effort and talent are required to open a bottle or mix a simple drink? Also, I don't mind what some seem to think a complicated math problem, that is unless I have run the bar bill TOO high. :)

In the grand scheme of things there isn't much difference in the average restaurant tab tip whether using 15-25% of the whole or the above suggestion.

Side bar on tipping. I always leave something for the server(s) but if the food has a problem, I always complain. If one does not complain then the management cannot know of a problem. If they don't correct it, that is the last they see of me. I also am quite willing to broadcast my displeaure to all my friends and associates.

Best regards,

KMEM
