Hey, book lovers! Here's a chance to get some good books and help out an American institution at the same time.

Losing the Strand would be significant to American literature and book lovers all over.

They have t-shirts too in case you don't like to read!

The Strand often has very rare vinyl not available anywhere else. Records from charity events like concerts by Ethel Merman and Mary Martin. Only high priced ticket purchasers received the records and with Martin, she signed "window cards"

So I just spent $42 in their shop. If every book lover did that, well...the post office would be even busier! Jobs will be created!:)

The plea for help has so far resulted in 25,000 online orders!

I am a little concerned about some of the media and specifically social media comments. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8876401/Multimillionaire-owner-Strand-Book-Store-slammed-saying-shop-shutter.html

It does seem like the owner has not been completely transparent about the situation. ?

Oh the power of social media. If only every struggling mom-and-pop had the buzz and aura of this "venerable institution".

I don't understand this comment at all. The Strand is a New York institution. It has goodwill in droves due to its long history as a good source of books, new and old. Other bookstores gave up when the Strand hung in there. They earned the goodwill they have. Any book store still in existence can do the same thing that the Strand did and call for help. The response will be determined by how much goodwill they have earned.

Ethel Merman OMG! I know it’s wrong to just think of her for this but she was in one of my favorite airplane scenes?

Same situation out in LA, or actually Pasadena, how we risk losing a venerable bookstore. Customers are responding. We love Vromans.

I didn't know of Strand bookstore until this week. It played a key role in a Netflix show being discussed under TV/Streaming. Hopefully the show will help add customers.

For fun

I'll order from Strand a copy of the book the show is based on.

I spent a couple of hours in The Strand last time I was in NYC, and I can understand why it has the status of 'venerable'. I don't remember if I bought a book, but I did buy a tote bag with, 'And yet she persisted', on it for my sister.

Strand sold out on the sweatshirt I tried to buy, so I am only getting a smaller item with their name on it. Glad they had such a good response, but I wanted that sweatshirt!
