I think Tony Dow was "Beaver's" older brother on "Leave it to Beaver."

I know I only watched the Beaver to see Wally---he and I were the same age(as was another "idol"---see below) so I really related:

Another young hunk who got my attention was Ricky Nelson on the "Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet." He was exactly my age and he just grew better and better with age. What a tragedy that he died so young.

I too only watched "Beaver" to see Tony Dow; it was Luke Halpin (or is it Halprin) that did "Flipper" - Dad on that show was pretty hot too!

I also related to "Spin and Marty" pretty well in my development years.

Ricky Nelson was very cute, but I was in love with his older brother David. That guy was HOT! He went into the production side of show business; the last glimpse I had of him was when Harriet Nelson died 14 years ago and I saw him in coverage of the funeral. He was still gorgeous then.

As for other prominent 50s TV figures...we must mention Arthur Godfrey who dominated daytime TV with a five-day-a-week variety show and had two primetime shows on CBS, "Arthur Godfrey and Friends" and "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts." There was a national uproar when he fired singer Julius La Rosa on live TV.

And does anyone remember Faye Emerson? She was famous for wearing "low-cut" gowns on air. And how about "What's My Line"? Fred Allen was a panelist and Steve Allen replaced him when Fred died. John Charles Daly, father of Tyne Daly, was the MC.

Speaking of hot young men, Spin and Marty did not hold a candle to the Hardy Boys on the Mickey Mouse Club.

I do remember Faye Emerson and her cleavage; I don't know what else she did beside appear as herself, like Dagmar (the bullet-shaped bumper guards on the front of early fifties Cadillacs were often referred to as "dagmars"). And then there was Eve Arden as "Our Miss Brooks," a prim and proper version of Faye Emerson.

(To the MOON, Alice!)

Don't really mean to argue with a charter member and all.....:D

But I believe the actual quote was

"to DA moon Alice." ;)

As for the OP, I too had a Howdy Doody puppet when I was about 4 or 5 years old. (Wish I had that inflation hedge today)

I have fond memories of Syd Ceaser and his gang, Jackie Gleason and his gang, Red Skelton and his one man gang. Your Hit Parade, What's My Line, and a host of other programs.

I remember the first broadcast of the Mickey Mouse Club. One of my great joys as an adult was after I had moved to the west coast to pursue my entertainment career. I was booked on a show (Guns of Paradise) filming out at the Disney Ranch in Saugus. When I stepped foot on the property where the Spin and Marty serial was filmed, gee, it took me back.

As for what's on Networks today, I admit I have gotten hooked on LOST this past season (or maybe it's Matthew Fox I have gotten hooked on) I have enjoyed everything Aaron Sorkin has done (WEST WING being my favorite). And what would life be without 24 and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA? }(

“Our Miss Brooks” was my favorite. It was on Friday night, right after “Mama”, another fave.

Eve Arden was never at a loss, and nobody did a slow burn like Gale Gordon. To this day, I remember Miss Brooks asking her landlady how she had slept. Not so well, she told Connie. “I woke up standing on my head, trapped in the wall by a Murphy bed.”

I was a young lad at the time - didn't know I was gay

(didn't even know what "gay" was) but I loved the show

"Flipper". Almost every guy had his shirt off - sometimes

ripping it off to save someone in distress in the water.

I fantasied about Sandy Ricks (Luke Halpin) being my older

brother. I too like the father-Porter Ricks (Brian Kelly).

The younger brother did nothing for me.

Cheers,

Fisher ;-)

Well, if you want to get into daytime TV I'm surprised nobody's mentioned DARK SHADOWS. (Maybe too 60's?)

I used to *run* home from school to catch it.

I recently saw some reruns of Hawaiian Eye staring a young Robert Conrad. WOW, he was handsome.
