Key take away, a good tattoo is not something you walk into a shop while on vacation in Florida and pick a design off the wall.

Exactly... First think what appeals to you emotionally and would look nice, later pick an artist, and finally make an appointment.

Is not like walking into a supermarket to see what's available.

Slightly off subject... many escorts now display "no tattoos" as a way to difference themselves from other inked advertisers. For some clients tats are a turn off.

Tattoos are a definite personal preference. While I like them in general I do like a guy with no ink. Some guys go overboard and the tattoos can be disjointed and overly done covering up what could be a really hot body. Case in point is the kid on the right. Those tats are not sexy, lol.

Do you disapprove/dislike the tattoos in the picture?

You're not alone!

I do. They look horrible in both cases. On the guy to the left maybe less horrible because of his darker complexion, but if you look closer he has a butterfly, yes a f*cking butterfly (that he's trying to cover with his hand btw), on his chest. The other guy just looks like he lost a bet or he got too drunk and his also drunk buddies took him to the shittiest tattoo studio to play a very bad practical joke on him. I bet you can find a lot of images on the internet with the hashtag #TattooRegret.

There are some interesting new trends in tattoo art. One is renewed interest in classic tattoos - hearts, roses, that sort of thing. And another is that some are recognizing jailhouse tattoos as a distinct style to be emulated. There was a young guy at my gym who had a lot of jailhouse tats. Since we both had tats we talked tats periodically. He liked the primitive unskilled look of jailhouse tats.

If we’re talking about bad tattoo choices, anyone remember Michael Hoffman? He was ripped and hot the first time I saw him. Fast forward and he now looks ridiculous. I couldn’t post full body shots because his erection would violate forum rules, but he has Popeye among other cartoonish characters on his thigh. I included a link below for those who are curious.

This is a definite “what not to do.”

What is so special about his age? Why should that be a reason not to get a tattoo? Most of the reasons you're going to give revolve around what other people think. Anybody who has been a little bit thoughtful about getting tattooed has thought of what others would think and realized that they don't care.

My uncle, who passed away a few years ago, had a very distinctive and calligraphic signature. Last year my aunt walked into a local tattoo parlor with her granddaughter, who went there herself, and had his signature tattooed on the inside of her forearm. She was 81 when she did it. As others have said, don’t let age stop you from doing this, especially if it’s meaningful.

I like these tattoos and a good example of color vs grey/black. I love paw prints on a guy bear, wolf. But that would be kinda obvious right, lol

I can't believe I am considering this, but lately I have seen a lot of (albeit young gay men) with a pine tree/forest tattoo. I LOVE it. Tonight I had the wild idea of possibly getting it done when safe to do so. Note, I am 61. Am I too old to get my first tattoo?

Never too old!!!! I got my first one as a retirement present to myself. I still love it!

Go for it!

That makes more sense. And of course, I would assume that is small and not visible unless topless, hence discreet given its personal connotation. A visible tattoo that one wants to show off just to follow a fashion trend, I'm not sure.

What makes you thinkg that everyone who gets large visible tattoos does it to follow a "fashion trend?" I wouldn't call them a fashion trend. Tattooing is a relatively ancient practice.

Oh, just because of the video I posted above. The girl who speaks there seems to be an influencer specialized in the topic and everything she said made perfect sense in the context of our current western society. Worth watching.

When considering getting a tattoo, you should be able to answer the question "Why am I getting it?". Is it because I want to admire it myself in the mirror every day of my life until I die? Is it because I think it will give others pleasure in admiring it? Is it to attract others, and increase my odds of getting physical action (probably unlikely)? Is it to look younger? If you can't answer that question, it's probably not a good idea.

I got my one and only tattoo in 1975 on my 35th birthday. I wanted to do something no rational, normal 35 year old high school teacher would ever do. I went to the Long Beach Pike and had a scorpion tattooed the the back of my right shoulder. I have NEVER regretting it.

Now fast forward to the mid 90's. At that time tattoos were just becoming popular with high school and college age kids. I ran a classroom where kids were free to ask me just about anything. On many occasions kids would ask my opinion regarding tattoos. I always told them that as I had one myself I couldn't very well advise not to get one. I did, however, strongly advised them that if they got one to have it placed where it could be hidden when formally or semi-formally dressed. At this point in the discussion everything usually came to a halt and I had to unbutton the top two button of my shirt so they could pull the back of my shirt down to see the tattoo.

My point here is that if you want a tattoo get one. Age and other peoples opinions are irrelevant -- it all comes down to what YOU WANT.

I don't think you're too old for it. I was thinking of one for myself, actually. I like this style and how it wraps around the forearm starting at the wrist.

Pretty, but you'd be looking at it backwards all your life...

I love tats but they gotta be tasteful. The only way I would get one would be to remember a loved that passes away or something that means something to me, like a milestone. I do like sleeves but some people do have tats in strange places like under the pecs or on the face or in the scalp.
