The lovely John Davidson, who Bob Mizer said was one of the nicest people he ever met. John sat for these studies shortly after reaching the age of 18, and left soon after for service in Vietnam. He never arrived, but died en-route of Encephalitis.

John Davidson on the left is one of my favorite AMG models. Here he is showering with his session partner, as is often seen, in Bob Mizer’s shower. John was just 18, and apparently was photographed by Mizer shortly before leaving for service in Vietnam in the 1960′s. He never reached there, but died en route of encephalitis.

Lovely John Davidson, who died days after these pictures were taken by Bob Mizer. Bob said he was one of the nicest young men he ever photographed. He was a marine who died of encephalitis en route to Vietnam in 1965.

John “Butchie” Davidson (1945-1965). One of Bob Mizer’s favourite models.

“Butchie was one of the liveliest, most energetic models we have ever had here. He was intelligent beyond his years, without being arrogant.”

He was born in Bronxville, NY in 1945 and grew up outside of Baltimore, Maryland. Butchie was already in the US Marine Corp when he started physique posing in 1965.

Butchie first met Bob Mizer in March 1965. In only six weeks Bob Mizer photographed and filmed him about eight times – solo and with other models like Tony Martin, Pat White, Bill Deane, Blackie Preston and Al Emond, who was a close friend of Davidson. He was featured in six AMG films.

Davidson first appeared in a five page spread in Physique Pictorial in June 1965 - which was printed and released only weeks after he left for the Vietnam Conflict.

Butchie never made it to the war. He died from Encephalitis on the island of Okinawa on the 4th of July 1965, five months before his 20th birthday, and only a few weeks after these photographs were taken.

Ironically, though he would never know it, John Davidson remains one of the most popular ever AMG models.

Four more pictures of vintage model Dennis Lavia (1962/3)

What did Bob Mizer have to say about Dennis…….

——“Dennis Lavia at age 19 born on Christmas Day 1943 in Des Moines, Iowa 5′10″ 150. Did weight training since age of 13. Construction work. Lt. brown hair, blue eyes, 11 ½ D shoes.”

That however was the official version, but in Bob’s symbol code we find the following additional, and revealing information:

A. Orally Inclined

B. Masculine Stud

C. Hustler

D. Dull

E. Will Bottom

Gay policeman, Harry Daley, and friend.

Harry was a gay man who befriended E M Forster and Joe Ackerley. It was Harry who introduced fellow policeman Bob Buckingham to Forster. He was on the periphery of the Bloomsbury Set, and was also friendly with several of it’s members. He was painted by Duncan Grant, and wrote his autobiography, called “This Small Cloud”. The picture above was taken by Monty Glover.
