Vintage men

WOW amazing! Small world huh? Were they really couples these guys in the pic or just good friends being affectionate like gay men can be?

The couple on the right were actually a couple, and were friends of mine for many years--both are now deceased. The others I vaguely recognize, but I didn't know them personally. The photo was taken several years before I moved to Philadelphia and discovered Rittenhouse Square.

Both Photographs by Mike Disfarmer (1884-1959), was born Mike Meyer in Indiana, his family moved to Arkansas in 1892. He changed his surname to “Disfarmer” possibly to break with his family’s agrarian roots. Disfarmer maintained a portrait studio in his hometown of Heber Springs, Arkansas, and photographed members of the local community for small fees.

Young men in all-male communities, like the military, frequently form a strong bond with one comrade which is not necessarily homosexual. Even gay men usually form similar non-sexual friendships with one another. When photography became common, such male comrades frequently had joint portraits taken together, to send back home (a) to reassure their families that they weren't lonely, and (b) to reassure their girlfriends that they weren't spending their free time with another girl. I'm sure that very few of them would have taken such photos if they thought it would be interpreted as evidence of a romantic relationship.

Googled him & discovered he was Paul Drake, Perry Mason's detective in the old TV show.
