Color me naive, but I must admit I am flabbergasted at the volume of (gay) male escorts. I've checked out various websites and cannot believe how many there are - everywhere! I grew up with the Advocate ads then the B.A.R newspaper long before the internet and it NEVER occurred to me there would be (gay) male escorts outside of NY, CHI, L.A. or SF. Maybe this is just an internet phenomenon, but it's staggering to me.

I agree with you. To me, the rising population of escorts is due to a couple of factors:

  • Fewer barriers to entry than before (essentially, a payment card and internet access vs placing want ads)
  • Easier access to clients (see above)
  • Easier access to escorts (again, see above)
  • Lack of decent-paying jobs for people starting a career and/or people who have been displaced via layoffs

Not everyone agrees with you, however, as evidenced in this thread.

I had a 21 yo companion tonight who ripped my clothes off and was rock hard! As for the number of escorts, he told me that in his generation (Z), “everybody” escorts, is trans, etc. It was an interesting post-fun conversation. They view is as just another “fun” Job

Another great point!

He also gauged my age as 45 LOL! I just smirked!

No kidnapping there, OK? :p

Agree... I hear the same thing.

I’ve heard a few millennial guys mention having a side hustle. Apparently it’s a thing now.

I have two really hot boys from Grindr coming over today. 18 and 21. They’re desire to have sex with each other, coupled with my ability to host this fun afternoon tryst, and their need for some pocket cash, and really it’s pocket cash compared to professional escorts, amounts to a fun afternoon and something that occurs time and time again. It wasn’t like this 3 years ago, times are definitely changing.

And have student debt to pay off or are escorting to pay for higher education.

I agree. Paying for college is a big reason why some guys get into escorting. I have student loans myself but as of now, I am financially o.k. ?

I am not really old enough to remember the 80s and was still a kid in the 90s, but I feel like there were certainly male street hustlers then. Certainly in films like Cruising, Mysterious Skin, and My Own Private Idaho. Maybe it just moved from being on the street to being online.

In the couple years I have been engaging in this hobby, I will say I haven't noticed a huge increase in the number of ads at least on Rent.men. Pretty much has always been about 3 pages long in Denver, with about 2/3 being locals and 1/3 visitors. That has been fairly consistent.

Anyone you might recommend in Denver? Please PM me if you prefer...

Do not forget “Midnight Cowboy” when talking of street hustlers. While I never hired a street hustler (I preferred the more refined men on the stage if the Gaiety in NYC), they did exist and were plentiful.

Back in the day I only knew of street hustling outside of maybe placing ads in the gay newspaper or alternative newspapers. Now everything is online and I've not seen an obvious street hustler in years. Back in college (and high school) you knew where the spots were by word of mouth and just driving by and seeing the guys hanging out. All I had to do when times were tough was to go to the park or street, take off my shirt, and hang out.

There used to some real stunners along Santa Monica Blvd. on the Eastern fringes of WeHo. I was always too afraid to engage, but there was a certain excitement in the eye contact.
