My cell phone contract is up and I want to switch carriers (am on Sprint), and had been looking at AT&T over the past year as one that I could switch to. I have been bitten by the iPhone bug so I may join the throngs on Friday to be the first to own the new HOT item. Or maybe not... the lack of GPS is a downer for me....

I was going to but I'm not going to.

Number one I'd rather wait for the second edition where the bugs are worked out and number two I'm not crazy about a sleek attractive phone that will probably be useless if you give it a good drop. (sort of like bringing home an expensive salt water fish for your tank and having it die on you - what to do but cry and flush it?) Is there an "Outback" or "Timberland" version of a phone? I'd love a cell you could throw against a wall and have it still work. LOL - a MANphone, not a nerd one.

I've had a couple of different carriers in our area, but I've been most pleased with Verizon. I got the Razr last year, but for some reason that particular phone did not maintain a signal in my home. Verizon allowed me to switch to another phone (also Motorola) and I've had no problems since.

New toys are great, but I agree that one should wait a while before obtaining the newest technological releases (Vista is a good example).

Well according to a recent USToday article, the iPhone may end up as the best tested phone ever. Te article did mention the drops the phone has gotten in testing. But I am not sure how well that metal body will hold up myself.....

My Treo 650 after two years is showing signs of much abuse....

I would seriously recommend against buying the iPhone. Even if you use or think you might like AT&T do you really want to be locked into using one provider? It's not really only a question of if you might ever want to switch but imagine what kind of power that gives the provider.

Even if you loved say Shell oil and all the gas stations near your house were Shell, how would you feel if your car could ONLY use Shell oil?

Apple has also said they will NOT allow third party applications on the iPhone.

Personally what I've done is kept my old cell phone for cellular calls. For mobile browsing, and WiFi needs I bought a Nokia N800 internet tablet which can also do Skype and Gizmo calls. The N800 is open source and runs Linux. There are already hundreds of third party applications available for it. I've already written programs for it and modified it to my liking.

Well my old Nokia3650 is not exactly manly looking, in fact I think it looks pretty nerdy or maybe dorky. But it is tough I've dropped it many many times on concrete, on cement stairs and watched it bounce down a couple flights. I've even thrown it across the room against a wall in response to friends asking the very same thing as you. Often the case pops off and sometimes the battery flies out. But even though it is beat to hell, cracked and now dorky and UGLY, it still keeps working.

And though it takes forever and makes my thumbs sore I can check my email from it and crudely browse the internet. But it is kind of large compared to the latest phones and did I mention that it is dorky and ugly? And has the wierdest keypad.

But you've got to love something that just keeps working.

LOL... Great minds think alike,

I did look at the N800 as an alternative. But being dependent on wifi is not what I am after.

My hot button issues are being able to check and reply to emails, be able to respond to AIM and YIM im's as time at work time allows. Being able to surf the net anytime, anywhere. GPS navigation would be great.

All but the later can be done with the iPhone. I would also like to tether my MacBook when I wanted a more full featured experience that can be had with a laptop.

But I would like to hear more about the programs for the N800.... Maybe I need to relook at it.....

What do you think about openmoko? http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo1973

OpenMoko is the bomb! Totally awesome thats the way to go IMHO.

Oh and Novabear mentions being dependent on WIFI with the N800. Yes if there is no WiFi then I connect via Bluetooth to my trusty cellphone.

I realize that carrying both seems a drag but actually I find it pretty cool. I only carry my indestructible (and old enough to be disposable) cell phone lots of times. But carry my N800 (instead of a laptop) when I travel or want better and faster browsing. I like the redundancy as I can half ass browse and email from my phone. And I can make phone calls (over WiFi) with my N800. If I lose or break one I'm still in business. Also and this is a great feature, if I'm nowhere near WiFi and browsing over cellular then I can stick the phone out on the window ledge or by the door whatever and sit using my N800 25 feet away whereever I'm comfortable not worrying about standing a certain way or whatever one has to sometimes do while browsing on/using their phone.

And I love that the N800 screen is 800 pixels wide meaning that most web pages render normally.

But if today I were buying a new handheld/cellphone/portable internet device I would seriously consider an all in one openMoko device.

This is how I feel about the Iphone

Also from the sounds of the phone you can get one of the newer versions of the Treo for a lot less and it does the same things as the Iphone for less. That is money you can put towards a new cruise or a nice MR.

I have a sidekick from T-mobile. It does instant messaging, browsing and cell phone all-in-one. The keyboard is the best. It is a little long in the tooth and it had its share of drops but it is a a survivor.

I was planning to switch to a blackberry but the instant messaging is jury-rigged as text messages on the blackberry instead of being a full-fledged IM application.

I am of the 'wait-n-see' crowd. Ideally, I want to buy an unlocked iPhone and use it as an internet tablet.

Cheers,

Greg

"Apple has also said they will NOT allow third party applications on the iPhone." This is not correct. At Apple's WWDC Jobs laid out some info how non-Apple companies can design applications for iPhone; developers were not thrilled but it will happen.

I agree with waiting for 2nd or 3rd edition to get the bugs out.

I bought one of the first (expensive) iPod's and promptly dropped it in the swimming pool. It was not designed for that!

Really sad thing was my failure to buy AAPL stock! and I fear it is again too late to buy (up 40% in 2 months) (Buy the rumor, Sell the fact).:-(

I don't intend to buy ANY phone right now because the one I'm using serves just fine. :-)

But if I was in the market, I wouldn't be looking for an iPhone. It may just be my lifestyle, but all I want my phone to do is be a phone.

Any time I'm in a position to deal with e-mail, chances are good I'll have do do research on my laptop to respond, and it's with me. If I'm already on my laptop, why would I go back to my phone to respond to mail?

I'm not interested in the phone as a music player. In fact I don't have or use a music player. My tastes run to classical, which suffers with mp3 compression. And a case of tinitus in one ear makes ANY use of headphones unbearable.

For watching videos, again I always have a laptop with a much bigger screen and headphones are out of the question.

And I don't DO text messaging or IM at all, so that's useless to me.

For now, my Razr serves perfectly well and is darn near indestructible. It has every right to look worse for wear but it doesn't.

I learned a long time ago never to be an early adopter of new tech items. They look real nice and it's cool to be the first on the block for some people but invariably there are kinks (not the fun kind) that need to be worked out. I am rather content to be the second or third guy on the block to buy such products. Invariably the price drops and the product enhancements are much better.

Plus, since it's only offered on AT&T there's no way I am changing carriers. Verizon was negotiating with Apple for the exclusive but dropped out due to all of the demands. As I recall, they said Job's demands were so onerous the phone would not be profitable for them.

Like Deej, I just want a phone that's just a phone. All those bells and whistles are a bit ridiculous to me. These phones are just like having all those cable channels. It's great to have 700 channels but in reality people only watch like five or six most of the time any way but you still have to pay for the ones you don't watch.

LOL, I am beginning to feel that you know me too well. :-)

To be honest I never bought a hot new item in the first days of its release. In some ways the iPhone is different. Yes, my Depression Era parents are playing a part in my not trying to buy in to the hype over the iPhone. $500-600 could go a long way towards other things in life....

Posted

>$500-600 could go a long

Particularly when you can get a perfectly serviceable PHONE for considerably less. ;-) And that assumes you NEED to buy a phone right now.

Think what that $500-600 would get you with the right escort(s). Having considered that, do you really NEED that iPhone? }(

I use a land line myself, and have no interest in cell at all. There may be the odd time it would come in handy, but many people I know have become slaves to those things.

We're the opposite; Derek and I got rid of our land line and only use cells now. I'd love to get an iPhone but I have a great plan with Sprint and I don't want to leave; plus, I'm pretty happy with my Treo (except when it crashes and makes me lose hot pics of Derek slathered in chocolate syrup and caramel sauce).

The joys of owning the Treo 650. Rick how many times has it crashed in a row on you? I got up to 7 times at once.

Wow, that's pretty bad. Mine's a 700 so it doesn't crash as often as the 650, plus I'm about to sell it on eBay & upgrade to a new 755, which is supposed to be faster & more powerful (plus, they got rid of that antenna, so it looks sleeker).

I hate that darn antana. The screw in mine some how come out so now I have to be careful when using it so I don't lose the darn thing. My contract is up next month and will be getting the newest version Sprint has also. I briefly read a new version might be coming out in the fall and Sprint will carry it.
