His rate is 250 euro an hour, which works out to about 300 dollars. Standard for the US market but quite above average for the European market. I texted him and he seemed friendly enough but not biting the bullet at that rate.

I haven’t hired in Europe for ages but don’t consider 250 euros expensive. The cost of living in places like Paris, London and Amsterdam is every bit as high as Manhattan.

That may be but 150 euro is what the overwhelming majority charge on mainland Europe (London has always had higher rates) so he is asking almost twice the "standard" rate here.
