If stool softeners and prunes don't work, a Dulcolax suppository will usually work.

 

 

For spine surgery, Kaiser had a bowel care protocol. I think it was senokot plus a stool softener. The bowel care script came with the script for opiates.

But everyone's different.

Personally I avoid any of the stimulant laxatives, unless I'm doing my colonoscopy prep. And even then I really dislike them.
