I have a Starwood Amex card. I might be a little worried.

I have a Marriott Visa, a Starwood Amex, and a Hilton Honors Amex. In the last few months, I've stayed at one Marriott property, and three Starwood properties. I used the Amex at the Starwoods, and the Visa at the Marriott (I really never liked Marriott). In my experience, when my card was compromised, or charges needed to be disputed, Amex is the best card company to deal with. I don't know the extent of the hotel data breach, but if I'm going to worry, I am going to worry more about Chase (the Marriott card), and if needed, just cancel that card.

I stayed at the Sheraton Gateway in LA a couple weeks ago. Very comfortable - check-in was a horrible experience though. I had reserved three nights. Starwood got the reservation wrong so we got there and the hotel wasn't expecting us until the next day. The night manager actually said it wasn't their problem. Starwood is a different company and we can't be held responsible for the mistakes of another company. I was thinking, "I can't believe I'm being spoken to this way in a four-star hotel." I said,"Why don't I just pay for an extra night?" They said well sure we can do that. After I checked out, I gave the front office manager an earful. He agreed. He comped the night I had paid for and gave me 40,000 Starwood points.

I have stayed exclusively at SPG hotels since early 2017. The cards on my file have been replaced. I’m still able to book rooms and simply provide my new card at check in. I traveled out of the country a few times, so I’m hoping I am not one of the victims with their passport compromised. With all of these merger issues, devaluation in points, and fraud, I may leave Marriott/SPG for good.

I’ve been staying at Hilton properties more frequently. As fas as SPG, I haven’t stayed in their properties since 2013, so I wasn’t affected. I’ve been more of an Airbnb client lately. Hotel point program should aren’t that important to me. My Amex and Visa Signature cards offer plenty of points accumulation opportunities.
