I am baffled by the good reviews for this movie: what am I missing? It seemed to me to be a bad chick-flick, pretentious commercialism trying to hide behind all the most common stereotypes and platitudes of the genre. "Sex and the City" without the sex or the wit.

RE: "The Devil Wears Prada"

Read the book.

Secondly ... hello Meryl! The acting was very well done in the movie and the story was making FUN of all those pretentious aspects of the industry while at the same time giving it some credibility.

i.e. the Cerulean scene (brilliant -- not in the book :()

I think another problem you have to look at is by comparison to the summer drek that is coming out it is Oscar worthy. I just saw the premiere of You, Me and Dupris last night and found myself asking the friends I came with from the studio if it was wrong for us to leave before the movie was over. It is HORRIBLE. I swear Goldie was yelling at Kate in a corner somewhere, "How could you make this crap and shame the family name?!!?"

But I digress, maybe I just loved the book so much that the movie was already a winner in my book. Then again, what other GOOD movies have been coming out that aren't epic sequels or based on a book?

Hollywood is drying up fast :(

P.S. As a professor I'm sure you can appreciate a good thorough analysis of the book and story:

I thought it was a fantastic movie! But then again, I lived in NYC for 3 years and worked in the fashion industry for a year of that so it brought back many memories.

Thanks for the link. The book plot summary sounds much more interesting--and funnier--than the film, in which many details have been changed to make the main character Andrea softer and duller. The positive film reviews seem to focus mostly on the Meryl Streep character, and I didn't find her characterization subtle or novel, as the reviewers seemed to.

Personally, I loved the movie.

Awesome story, good acting, and very good overall flow.

I loved how the girls life became so obsessed and twisted, but ultimately returned somewhat normal after she realized career isn't everything she wanted out of life.

I thought Meryl Streep played the flawless role as THE MEGA BITCH of the movie. Anne Hathaway played the perfect "FAT SMART GIRL" Lol!

I just love how they make fun of weight in this movie. It totally reminds me of my girl friends at USF. I think I nearly fell over when I heard about the "cheese cube" diet.

Please don't be so quick to judge a movie, if you are not "in the know".

I personally am not obsessed with those overly priced "high end" bags... but I know people who are, and do pay those prices, and obsess when they can't get them. So I found it quite amusing :)

>Saw 3 films today.Pirates''',Breakup,and Devil wears Prada.

>Devil was the best of the 3 and I enjoyed(but did not love)it

I have not seen Pirates and am unlikely to do so - but I have seen the other two. I thought Breakup was more interesting than Prada although it didn't have the power of a Streep performance.

I'm not a huge Vince Vaughn fan - about 50 lbs too much of him for my tastes. But I guess his character would not have been believable if he had been a cutie.

Just got back from seeing this flick....mainly to escape the mid-western heat!

This is the best summer movie I've seen so far....and it is no "chick-flick". Meryl Streep is tough as nails, tougher than John Wayne was in any western.

While some may find the script glib, I thought it was remarkably sharp and witty. A bonus: the young ingenue's boy-friend is VERY easy on the eyes. ( Is he the star of HBO's "Entourage"? I've only seen the commercials....)

I'm not sure about "Entourage", but he was the star in "The Adventures of Sebastian Cole".

He is the lead guy in "Entourage". I just watched the latest episode about an hour ago.

Like others here, I really enjoyed "The Devil Wears Prada" and am thankful I don't work for someone like the Merryl Streep character in the movie. I've always been a big fan of this actress. Two weeks earlier I saw her in "Prairie Home Companion" and continue to be increasingly impressed by the wide variety of characters she portrays.

If you want to be impressed by "the streep" you should see Angels in America.

Don't read anything about the movie before you see it.. just rent it and watch it... try to pick out how many times you see her, then watch the credits. It's crazy!!!

Jaden if you ever get a chance to see the complete play on stage(in a good production house of course)please do so.

I saw the play with Micheal Learned as the angel here in Los Angeles-along with a great cast,it was two night marathon production and it was one of the most life changing events of my time.

According to Katharine Hepburn's official biographer A. Scott Berg, Meryl Streep was her least favorite modern actress on screen: "Click, click, click," she said, referring to the wheels turning inside Streep's head.

Posted

Miss Hepburn has a long a storied reputation of not appreciating any actress that should ultimately be compared to her in talent.

Read Jane Fonda's book concerning the "tiff" while making "On Golden Pond".

I've heard the only thing upon which two actresses can agree is the incompetence of a third.

There is room in the stratosphere for the brightest shining stars in which the Madames Hepburn, Streep and Fonda all belong.

You can see the wheels clicking when Streep "acts." Hepburn does have credibility. Her work speaks for itself. I would agree that neither lady has great sex appeal. An underrated actress is Angela Lansbury. If you watch the original "Manchurian Candidate" you will see a gut wrenching job done by Lansbury. The remake was a total disaster.

Speaking of Angela Langsbury, I watched her as a young woman last Friday night on Turner Classic Movies in a film "Kind Lady" from 1951. She was only in a supporting role with the lead performers being Ethel Barrymore and Maurice Evans, but Angela was marvelous in what was an interesting precurser of her future stardom. If you're able to find this old movie (perhaps through Netflix) I recommend it highly.

I've been a big Angela Lansbury fan for years.

You gotta love a broad who can invent the role of Mame on Broadway (and get comments in the liner notes on the original cast recording about how well she fills out the costume }( ), who is still going strong 40 years later.

And all of it believable.

In Mame she sang these lyrics from the incomparable Jerry Hermann:

"I feel like jumpin' and lindy hoppin' and jitter buggin' and ...

that's ... how ... young I feel!"

She's still living it. Love her!

I also hated this movie. It's only saving grace was Adrian Grenier of Entourage, who played the boyfriend/chef. I did wonder why Adrian had no muscle tone at all...just stick figure arms and legs. Maybe today's Page Six in the New York Post has the answer:

JUST ASKING

August 30, 2006 -- WHICH TV star is doing a little too much cocaine? The actor recently went to the Soho Grand where he "did lines out in the open bar," and at the Emmys he "wore a dirty brown shirt and smelled of drugs" . . . WHICH recently separated couple liked to have another woman join them in the bedroom? Sadly for the husband, his wife liked the women more than him - and when he finally banned others from his bed, his wife realized she was no longer attracted to him at all.

And then, the website hotelchatter.coom offers this:
