I've been watching this old tv show set in the 1950s. In the episode I just watched the lead went undercover as a carpenter. He is paid $3.00 per hour.

 

In the mid 70s my father had a porch added to the house. That salary was $10 per hour.

 

It is well know that undocumented migrant workers are exploited in the building trade but I've not heard what their salary is.

$10 per hour in the 70’s was good money; around $20k per year.

In his late teens, my father immigrated to the US in 1940 all by himself. Never finished the equivalent high school in his country. He eventually got a union job in the building trades. In the mid 60's, I remember seeing his pay stub a few times. His take home was a little over $200 for a week. I thought that was a lot of money.

The average yearly salary in 1965 was $6,450. So, yes, $200 per week ($10,400 a year) was darn good.
