    I’m in the minority, but I find Madrid far preferable to Barcelona. Barcelona’s best days are behind it. I love most other Spanish cities, especially San Sebástian.

    My friends and associates always are puzzled by my hotel choices. While I can afford to stay anywhere, if it’s just me I generally choose Courtyard by Marriott or Hilton Garden Inns for business or “liaison” purposes. When in Europe I usually do really nice Airbnbs or more upscale Marriott properties, like Luc in Berlin. If I’m traveling solo I just don’t see the point in spending $700+ to stay in a luxury resort with all the fawning and amenity fees. I attribute this to some distant Mennonite ancestry!
