I believe there's a difference between not gaining money versus losing money. The $350 you would have made isn't lost, it just wasn't gained. You still have your original amount of money. Conversely, the gasoline and time you used traveling to the hotel is lost.

Basic summary time again: hotels often screw me as a provider, but I keep using them, and then just turn around and screw the client out their deposit when the hotel screws me.
And again, someone please let me know if my summary is not an accurate representation.

So in this particular case: there’s still the fact that I had to pay for the hosting accommodations. So that’s where the deposit was needed. 
 
Add to that, the way he sent it: he claims it was friends and family. PayPal saying it was goods and services. So PayPal holds the money and refuses to give it to me. Somebody is lying. Either the client is lying or the PayPal is lying. That essentially caused the funds to get held up in the first place, and I couldn’t book the dayuse room alternative I had in mind, because I already paid the room prior. 


 
The only deposit advice I would say no to: is PayPal going forward.
And I’m not issuing a refund because I spent 2 hours of my day driving and setting up the hotel. It’s the hotel fault they messed up my booking by not having a room like I booked. And I called since then, it’s true the system for the hotel kicked back the reservation due to overbooking. Never had that happen but I guess it happens sometimes if a “large group” comes and books multiple rooms. 
 
This is not a lesson of “Don’t pay Deposits”, it’s more of an example of how bookings can get messed up if there’s not flexibility on both sides on hosting. I also made all the concessions and proper calls to ensure hotel availability. I was screwed over as much or MORE than he was. I’ve lost $350. He only has $75 on the line, but I’m going to give that back to him in the form of a month subscription on my website.

Gentelmen, I think this is my all time favorite sentence on COM. The client did EVERYTHING that was requested of him to make the appointment a success - including sending that almighty deposit.
The provider failed to secure the location. Please note, I am not saying the provider should have or could have done more to secure the location. I am only saying it was the provider responsibility, and it didn't happen. Yet, the provider is still resistant to give back the deposit.
Am I missing something? Is my summary of the basic facts wrong? Or is it, as most of us know, the simple, basic premise "deposits are only a risk for the client."

Good god how many proverbs does one need to teach that you should set up some basic rules and stick to them? I'm going to require 24 hrs notice/I'm only booking same day, I'm requing a deposit/I won't pay a deposit, I'll only do incall/I'll only do outcall, I'll always pay at the end/I'll always require cash up front, etc.
To each his own in making rules that work for him. However, I am not going to have a lot of sympathy when anyone tells me they already learned the lesson, made themselves guidelines, and then greed for dick, or cash, made them ignore past lessons.

The international crews will always plague the market, either with mediocre unskilled work, or  with its scams. 
Keep in mind that in many of their countries of origin, they don’t have the opportunity to make $200-$300 per hour or to even scam someone for deposits.
