I acknowledge my real name. If someone really wants to find out, they can scope out the mailboxes or buzzer for your building or if you are staying in a reputable hotel, they have to use your name anyway or they can call down for room service and the staff will greet you by name. If someone wants to know your name, they can figure it out. It is not that difficult unless you are without ID, paying by cash, or in a vacuum. The key is to find someone who mutually respects you and practices discretion. I have personally had someone abuse the privilege, but it taught me to make adjustments on my end. Some people are simply volatile and you should be able to identify that up front and avoid those types altogether.
