Actually, the only measure that exists in any serious sociology papers on the subject is self-identification. If you identify as gay, you are gay, if you identify as straight you are straight. Any attempt to use other measures (like number of people of the same sex you fucked) falls under heavy criticism, as there are in reality as many categories as there are human being, and there are gay virgins etc. So the only solution that is both practical and ethical, is to use self-identification.
