  4. Two teenage boys plotted to “get rid” of a 14-year-old girl because her texts and Snapchats annoyed one of them, according to authorities. The two 16-year-old boys, who have not been identified, are now facing attempted aggravated murder charges for allegedly shooting 14-year-old Deserae Turner in Logan, Utah. Cache County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Groves testified Tuesday at a preliminary hearing that the boys lured Deserae on Feb. 16 to a canal, where she was shot in the head and left for dead. Deserae was not found until the next day after her family reported her missing, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. She survived the shooting, but was critically injured and remains hospitalized. In an interview, one suspect told Groves that they came up with the plan for the attack while playing video games. The teen said the murder plot started as a joke when he remarked that he wanted to get rid of Deserae because he “got tired” of her contacting him. But then his friend said, “It would be pretty easy to get rid of her.” The two friends began plotting to kill her by either using a knife to slit her throat or shooting her, according to Groves. She met them at the canal Feb. 16 on the pretense of buying a knife. When she turned around, one of the boys shot her in the back of the head, the Desert News reported. A juvenile court ruled Tuesday that there was sufficient evidence for one of the 16-year-olds’ trials to proceed. The other teen is scheduled to appear Wednesday in court. In addition to the attempted murder charges, the two 16-year-olds are both accused of aggravated robbery and obstruction of justice.
  5. Judge refuses to grant bail to ex-model who claimed self-defense after fatal Brooklyn stabbing BY CHRISTINA CARREGA NEW YORK DAILY NEWS A Brooklyn judge refused to grant bail Wednesday to a former model who maintains he was acting in self-defense when he fatally stabbed a man he’d met on the online dating app Jack’d. David Keegan Riotto Haigh, 42, has been jailed on Rikers Island for six months since being charged with stabbing James Johnson to death inside a fourth-floor apartment at the Ingersoll Houses. “The prosecutors only presented to the bail-fixing court the charges and that Mr. Johnson was stabbed 20 times,” Haigh’s attorney, Thomas H. Andrykovitz, argued Wednesday. Andrykovitz said bail is justified because Haigh has never veered from his story that he acted in self-defense, telling investigators in a 90-minute videotaped statement soon after the slaying that he felt threatened after Johnson demanded sex. Haigh and Johnson, 41, met on Jack’d and had spent the weekend of April 9 partying with a group of people the victim also met on the hook-up app. “My client was in fear for his life and was scared to pull out his phone out to call the police. He texted a friend twice at 5:02 a.m., ‘911, 911’ before the fight that ended in Mr. Johnson’s death,” said Andrykovitz, who obtained the text messages from Haigh’s friend. Unbeknownst to Haigh, his online lover was under investigation by the NYPDfor criminal sex act charges stemming from a similar attack on a 25-year-old man inside the fourth-floor apartment nine days earlier, according to court documents. Assistant District Attorney Timothy Gough conceded that Haigh did claim self-defense in a taped statement and was also injured during the attack. Johnson was stabbed 18 times and had 21 lacerations, the prosecutor said. Haigh was indicted on second-degree murder and weapons possession charges and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted. “When police arrived at the apartment, the door was barricaded and the defendant was sitting on top of the victim...he indicated he was using drugs,” said Gough, who argued against bail for the Philadelphia man who has no ties to the state and is self-employed. Andrykovitz argued that he’d established a stable New York address: If bail were set, Haigh planned to live in a Brooklyn Heights apartment owned by Marc Carpentier, a former assistant budget commissioner for the Department of Correction and a longtime friend of Haigh. The judge denied the attorney’s request, noting that the grand jury heard his client’s claims of self-defense and still indicted Haigh for intentional murder charges. Haigh is expected back in court on Dec. 1. http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly_fs/1.3555739.1507739530!/img/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/article_750/bkstab12n-2-web.jpg James Johnson http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly_fs/1.3555740.1507739531!/img/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/article_750/bkstab12n-1-web.jpg David Keegan Riotto Haigh
  6. Teen accused of raping neighbor allegedly asked if he could do yard work to make it up to her Fearing for her life, the woman tried to convince the suspect she did not know him. He told her that he "could not imagine leaving two kids without a mother because his mother passed away" when he was 12. Walding would later reveal himself to her by taking off his mask, according to cops. When she asked him how he got into the house, he said, "you really should deadbolt your door because I didn’t really want to do this, but I had to do it," according to the affadavit. He also told her he was going to serve in the military so "it would not be awkward" living next to each other. Walding also asked if he could "make this up to her" by doing some yard work by fixing something around her house. She said "no." He is facing multiple charges, including three counts of sexual assault. http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly_fs/1.3555624.1507736031!/img/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/article_750/florida.jpg

  10. Desperate to avoid a winner-take-all Game 5 in this American League Division Series, the Houston Astros asked ace Justin Verlander to do something Monday that he hadn't done as a professional or in college. It didn't work out well. With the Astros leading by one run and trying to close out the Boston Red Sox in the best-of-five series, Verlander warmed up in the bullpen and made the first relief appearance of his career with one out and a runner on first base in the fifth inning. The first batter he faced, Red Sox rookieAndrew Benintendi, belted a two-run homer to right field to swing the score -- and perhaps the series -- in Boston's favor and prompt taunts of "Jus-tin! Jus-tin!" from the crowd at Fenway Park. Regardless of the outcome, the move was bound to bring scrutiny upon Astros manager A.J. Hinch. Verlander was the winning pitcher in Game 1 and was lined up to start Game 5, if necessary, Wednesday night in Houston. Asking the 34-year-old right-hander to do something he hasn't done in 402 major league appearances (including postseason), 22 minor league outings and 42 games in college at Old Dominion will likely be perceived as a panic move by Hinch. The Red Sox also made unconventional moves with their bullpen, bringing in ace Chris Sale in relief of starter Rick Porcello in the top of the fourth inning. But Sale has extensive experience as a reliever, having started his major league career in the bullpen with the Chicago White Sox in 2010 and 2011. Also, with the Red Sox on the brink of elimination, they had to be more concerned with winning Game 4 than planning for a potential Game 5. Fortunately, it all worked out in the end, as Verlander shut down the Sox through the end of the seventh inning, helping the Astros to eliminate the Bosox:p:D:), proving once again that Big Pappy let down the organization and the fans when he failed to pass on his PED dealer's name to the next generation of Red Sox sluggers(???) after his retirement.
  11. The President Trump stock market rally is close to becoming the greatest in 85 years. Since Election Day, the Dow Jones industrial average has surged 24.7 percent — fueled in large part by investor enthusiasm for Trump’s plans to cut regulations and taxes and bring back manufacturing jobs. Barring a large sell-off over the next month, Trump’s Dow rally will surpass the 23.3 percent gain the much-watched stock index posted in the year following the election of President George H.W. Bush. The Trump rally, beginning its 12th month today, is compared to the one-year Dow record starting on Election Day. You’d have to go back to FDR, first elected in 1932 as the US started to recover from the Great Depression, to see a larger jump. The Dow rose 54.9 percent following Election Day that year. What’s more, surveys of business confidence are at an all-time high — something the tweeting president sees as a personal conquest. “Business is looking better than ever with business enthusiasm at record levels. Stock Market at an all-time high. That doesn’t just happen!” Trump tweeted on Aug. 3. Some observers, though, are hard-pressed to point to the reasons behind the historic runup — especially when Trump often targets business leaders with criticism. “When I think back on the whole year, the forecast versus the fulfillment, I don’t think the Trump administration has done anything,” Sam Stovall, an analyst at CFRA, told The Post. “Other than maybe reduce a couple of regulations, or at least lower the bar on regulation, nothing’s happened.” Other major indexes have also seen huge surges this year. The S&P 500, a broader gauge of US companies, has risen 19.2 percent since Election Day. The Nasdaq has surged the most, 26.9 percent, driven largely by Apple and Amazon — two companies that Trump has publicly attacked. The Trump tax plan, which may face a rough road to being law of the land in its current form, is aiming to slash nominal tax rates for corporations from about 40 percent to about 20 percent, as well lower taxes that would incentivize companies like Apple to move profits abroad back to the US. “We believe we can have 3-plus percent growth with taxes and the regulation reform that we’re after now,” Gary Cohn, Trump’s top economic adviser, told Bloomberg TV on Friday. The US didn’t have a single year with 3 percent growth in gross domestic product under President Obama. Investors like tax cuts for foreign money because companies tend to spend that money on stock buybacks, which often lifts share prices. Of course, stocks could collapse at any time, though it’s hard to imagine when. On Thursday, the VIX, known as Wall Street’s fear index, hit its lowest level ever — an indication that investors are keeping their chips in the game. Since Election Day, the Dow has surged an average of 2 percent a month, closing at 22,773.67 on Friday. If the bull market maintains its pace, the Dow could rise above 23,200 by Nov. 8 — marking a gain of about 5,100 points.
  12. Benny & Bjorn wrote CHESS & collaborated on MAMA MIA. The women sang together (one song) for the first time since the group broke up last year at some celebration in Sweden regarding the band. Agnetha (the blonde) won't fly-- she even skipped their induction into the rock & roll hall of fame for that reason. And they all feel they could never live up to expectations if they reunited.
  13. Of all the mistakes people make when speaking, either grammatical or misquoting expressions, the one that most drives me up the wall is when somebody says, "I could care less..." about something. THAT MAKES NO SENSE! If you could care less about something, that means you DO care about it, at least a little bit, and it is possible that something could make you care even less than you currently do. HOWEVER, when you use the correct expression, "I COULDN'T CARE LESS..." it means that nothing in the world could cause you to care any less, because you already care as little as is humanly possible for you to care. GOD, I NEEDED TO GET THAT OFF MY CHEST!!!
  14. DEAR ABBY: I am a bridesmaid for my brother's upcoming wedding. However, his fiancee is throwing out some crazy mandates for the big day. 1. All family members must wear contact lenses. Glasses will not be allowed because they look ugly in pictures. (Both her mom and my parents wear glasses.) 2. She made my father get dental work to "improve his smile." 3. I recently tore my ACL, and she says I can't bring crutches to the ceremony because she doesn't want them in the pictures. How much more of this should our family put up with? I love her as my niece's mother, but not as my future sister-in-law. Would it be better to tell them I won't be a bridesmaid? I am afraid to speak up because I want a relationship with my niece. -- AFRAID OF BRIDEZILLA DEAR AFRAID: Your brother's fiancee appears to have gone off the deep end. Weddings are supposed to be about love, commitment and the joining together of two families, not the photo album. While I sympathize with her desire for a "perfect" wedding, the idea that your parents and her mother must invest in contact lenses or miss seeing the ceremony and reception because glasses aren't "allowed" is ludicrous. And the suggestion that you leave your crutches and risk further damaging your ACL is off the charts. Talk to your brother. Perhaps he can make his ladylove see the light. If not, I wouldn't blame you -- and your parents and her mother, by the way -- if you decided to skip the "show." DEAR AFRAID: Your sister-in-law-to-be is a FUCKING LOON. Tell your brother to grab his daughter and run for the hills! DEAR ABBY: My husband, "Jason," and I have a 19-year-old daughter, "Laurie," who finished her freshman year of college with a 4.0 GPA. She has always been a great student and is interested in theater, music and dance. She has never given us any trouble. My husband is very conservative and opinionated about politics. Our daughter has become much more politically liberal over the last couple of years. Jason thinks it is disrespectful of her to not want to listen to him try to influence her to think like he does (he has tried before). I have told Jason she needs to work out her own political beliefs and, as she matures and sees how the business world works, she'll probably become more moderate. Jason is now insisting that we set a time when "the three of us can talk," which means he will lecture her about where she is wrong. What can I do as a mother and wife to mediate this meeting? I think both of them are pretty dug in. -- LOVE THEM BOTH IN ARKANSAS DEAR LOVE: I see no way that what your husband has in mind will be either pleasant or productive. However, because he is her father, Laurie owes him the respect of hearing him out. When the conversation becomes heated -- as it very well may -- suggest a timeout until they both cool down. Or leave the room if it becomes too stressful for you. DEAR LOVE: Your husband is a FUCKING LOON. Grab your daughter and run for the hills!

  19. Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is incredibly close to his family. They grew up very poor in Athens and relied on each other — at points Giannis used to have to work selling trinkets during the day to feed the family at night — which is part of why the family was so tight. They remain close, and Giannis — who is very proud he can provide for them — has brought his entire family over from Greece to Milwaukee. Which is why this news is especially sad: Charles Antetokounmpo, Giannis’ father, passed away Friday from a heart attack at age 54. “The Bucks family is heartbroken about the sudden death of Giannis’ father, Charles,” the Bucks said in a statement. “The entire organization, his teammates and coaches are here to support Giannis and his family during this incredibly difficult time. Charles was a big part of the Bucks and will be terribly missed by us all. On behalf of ownership, we express our utmost condolences and offer our prayers to Giannis and his family.” Charles leaves behind his wife, Veronica, and five children, including former Knick Thanasis (who was playing in the Greek league but is flying to the United States for the funeral, which will be in Milwaukee.

  21. If there's a bigger cheerleader for genealogy research than Henry Louis Gates Jr. it's unlikely they're nearly as well-connected. The prominent Harvard professor once again lures the famous and celebrated to PBS' "Finding Your Roots," which shares their ancestry and family stories as uncovered by impressive research and science. In the fourth season beginning Tuesday (check local listings for time), the three dozen subjects include Scarlett Johansson, Lupita Nyong'o, Sean Combs, Amy Schumer, Garrison Keillor, Aziz Ansari, filmmaker Ava DuVernay, author Ta-Nehisi Coates and Christopher Walken. Larry David, whom Gates said he'd "bugged" for three years to go under the "Roots" microscope, finally agreed and discovered that he's related to Bernie Sanders, whom David memorably impersonated on "Saturday Night Live." Their separate family stories are on the season opener. David said he was reluctant to have personal details disclosed on TV but was glad he finally took part, lauding the "incredible job" done by researchers. There were other revelations that took him aback, he said. David learned of ancestors who settled in Birmingham, Alabama, in the 1840s, owned two slaves and fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. A hundred years later, many aunts, uncles and cousins on the maternal side of his family died in Nazi Germany's Holocaust. But "Finding Your Roots" is aimed at more than satisfying individual curiosity and telling an engrossing story, said Gates, an executive producer and writer as well as host of the series: It carries a message of shared origins that he argues can benefit society. The science of DNA proves that "there aren't four or five biologically distinct races. We're all from one race, the human race, genetically," Gates said. "And we know that genetically we all ... descended from common ancestors that left the African continent 50,000 years ago. That's a fact." Detailing how different ethnic groups contributed to world history and how their experiences "merged or conflicted" with those of other groups is also of immense value, he said. "It's part of a larger education process to make us all realize we're fully human," Gates said. Advances in DNA testing and the increased digitization of records benefited those who participated this year, he said, while some searches required plain old shoe leather as well. Among the stars with standout stories: — Carly Simon, sister of Neil and Paul, who was eager to find out whether their maternal grandmother, who came to the United States from Cuba, had her lineage right: She claimed to be the offspring of the king of Spain and a Moroccan slave. Researchers traveled to Cuba to search out Catholic church records unavailable online and found "an amazing family tree," Gates said, one different than expected. Simon's grandmother was found to be 40 percent black, making the singer-songwriter 10 percent black. Her grandmother "invented this crazy story, this fabrication, because she knew she was from a mixed-race heritage, and that was very unpopular in the 1950s and '60s," Gates said. — Tea Leoni, who asked the show to focus on finding the family of her mother, Emily Patterson, an adoptee who never knew the names of her biological parents. Over a period of months, Patterson's DNA was run through databases that hold DNA results for some 6 million people, Gates said. A match would show they had a common ancestor. The candidates were narrowed to a pair of sisters, one of whom proved to be Patterson's mother and who, at 96, was still alive, Gates said. A private meeting was arranged with her for Leoni, Patterson and Leoni's daughter. Research also revealed Leoni's biological mother's father, and traced his family back to her seventh great-grandfather, born around 1690, and his Virginia-born son who at one point lived near George Washington. — Questlove, the musician, producer and writer born Ahmir Khalib Thompson, found his family has an extraordinary place in U.S. history. In 1860, five decades after the slave trade to the United States was abolished, a ship commissioned by a Southern planter illegally brought about 110 slaves to Mobile Bay, Alabama, from a port now located in the Republic of Benin, Gates recounted. It was the last known slave ship to arrive in the United States, Gates said. Aboard was a couple who would take the names Charlie and Maggie Lewis and who were recorded on the 1880 census as African-born. As freed people, they settled in an Alabama town largely made up of others on the ship, and Questlove's distant cousins who live in the area shared with him a photo of Charlie Lewis, Gates said.
