The Grand Ole Opry is often called the heart of country music, and for more than a century, it’s lived up to that name. Since its founding in 1925, the iconic Nashville venue has become a rite of passage for country artists and a symbol of tradition. So when the Opry announced that pop star Sabrina Carpenter would be stepping into the circle on October 7, fans were quick to weigh in. The official announcement came via the Opry’s Instagram account on September 19. “Oh, boy! @sabrinacarpenter is making her Opry debut! The two-time Grammy-award winning global superstar just released her 7th studio album ‘Man’s Best Friend’ and we can’t wait to welcome her to the Opry stage on October 7. See you soon, Sabrina!” Carpenter, 26, is without a doubt becoming a rising force in pop music. With seven studio albums and multiple chart-topping hits to her name, the former Disney Channel star has built a successful career on her own terms. Still, her name isn’t exactly synonymous with country music, and that left some longtime fans conflicted. While some fans praised the move, others expressed confusion, asking questions like, “Ok love her so much but why is she at the Opry” and “She’s pop not country. What is happening with the Opry!!???” One comment even called her debut a “disgrace to country music.” On the flip side, many supporters defended her appearance. Some highlighted that Carpenter has country influences in her sound and has teamed up with a country icon, Dolly Parton, for a version of her single “Please Please Please.” For those fans, her Opry debut feels like less of a stretch than critics are claiming. It's worth mentioning that the Opry has a long history of opening its doors to artists outside traditional country circles. Performers like Paramore, Pharrell Williams and Steven Tyler have all graced the Opry stage. While the venue honors its roots, it has continued to evolve alongside the changing times and the music that resonates with new generations of fans.

Queens cops and community members honored a female police detective with a street renaming over the weekend for a woman who blazed a trail in the NYPD during the early 20th century. Detective Mary “Mae” Foley was more than just a part of the “Masher Squad” that took down men who abused women. She was a Nazi hunter who stopped fascist infiltrators before World War II, and was instrumental in the criminal investigation of notorious gangster Charles “Lucky” Luciano. But to her grandson, Bob Carr, she was just Nana. “She was a tough woman, you know, she didn’t take any guff,” Carr said. “She was a good grandmother, she really was. She was very loving.” While Carr grew up knowing her as the family matriarch, she was also a leader in a very different kind of family. She began her journey in the NYPD in 1923 and cuffed predatory men who assaulted women. She rose through the ranks, becoming a homicide detective and even took on Nazi sympathizers known as the German American Bund — an organization affiliated with Nazi Germany that sought to popularize Adolf Hitler in America before the US entered the war following the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941. Bear terrorizes New Jersey Dollar General, bites 90-year-old woman before being shot A shocking encounter unfolded Tuesday afternoon when a black bear wandered through the aisles of a Dollar General store in Vernon, New Jersey, after biting a 90-year-old woman. The unusual sighting occurred around 4 p.m., when the wild animal was seen roaming the store’s aisles. It lunged at shoppers and pets, raising fears that the animal was sick, according to CBS News. In a video filmed by local real estate agent Sean F. Clarkin, the 175-pound female bear walks through the store as everyone looks on, terrified. Clarkin, who tried to guide the bear out of the store, could be heard nervously talking to the animal, “What’s up, buddy? You are one big, nasty motherf—-r.” As the bear approached him, Clarkin’s voice grew increasingly frantic, “Where the f–k is the door?” The bear had already bitten an elderly woman in the leg before Clarkin began filming. The woman was rushed to the hospital, and reports later confirmed the bear had also attacked a local’s dog. Despite efforts by police to corral the bear back into the woods using rubber bullets, the animal kept returning to the store, prompting authorities to make the decision to shoot it. In the video, Clarkin is heard urging the bear toward freedom, shouting “Freedom, buddy, freedom!” as the animal appeared unbothered by his commands. But moments later, as the bear’s demeanor shifted, Clarkin shouted, “Get away! Get the f–k away! Move!” The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Fish and Wildlife Division is now investigating the incident. Clarkin later posted a statement on social media, calling attention to the root cause of such encounters — unsecured dumpsters. “After years — decades — of the municipality allowing restaurant and business dumpsters to remain open and unsecured, we’re now witnessing the consequences,” he wrote. “When bears have easy access to human food, their population grows rapidly, leading to unnecessary annual hunts. If we reduce access to dumpster food, we’ll see a natural decline in bear populations and, in turn, less need for these hunts.” As officials continue their investigation, the unsettling incident highlights growing concerns over human-wildlife conflicts in suburban areas.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters (including Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic) today that catcher Will Smith had undergone additional scans following his placement on the injured list last week, and that testing revealed a hairline fracture in Smith’s injured hand. The news makes it “doubtful,” in Roberts’s words, that he’ll play again during the regular season this year. More concerning is that whether or not Smith will be available for the start of the playoffs remains “up in the air.”

I have caught up on the four episodes shown so far this season. I'm not finding it as funny as I did in the past but nobody is annoying me so I've enjoyed it well enough so far though I had to suppress projectile vomiting when Jane Lynch appeared for a few seconds in a flashback. -

Large on-street garbage bins are set to be installed in hundreds of parking spaces across some of Brooklyn’s most densely populated neighborhoods over the next year, Mayor Eric Adams announced Tuesday. The rollout continues a pilot program that has over the last two years brought trash containers to streets in parts of Harlem. Residents in the area no longer pile their garbage up on sidewalks, but building supers instead toss their bags in the bins in a change city officials said has reduced rat populations by eliminating a key food source for pests. Sanitation officials said roughly 1,100 of the bins have been deployed in Upper Manhattan. Now, the city plans to add 1,500 more of them in Brooklyn’s Community Board 2, which includes neighborhoods like Boerum Hill, Brooklyn Heights and Fort Greene. Adams said schools in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill will get the bins as soon as this fall while sanitation officials conduct door-to-door outreach to plan the wider rollout. Officials said the use of the containers in the Brooklyn community board will be mandatory for residential buildings with more than 30 units once they’re installed next year. Landlords of buildings with 10 to 30 units can either request a container to be installed on their street or use city-sanctioned wheeled trash bins to put out their garbage. The “Empire Bins,” which are made in Spain, sit at the curb and are emptied by new $500,000-a-piece garbage trucks purchased by the sanitation department that are equipped with lifts. They can only be opened with special keys held by building supers or sanitation department crews.
