  1. Wow! I'm surprised your old Victrola still works. Or is it a gramophone?
  2. https://apple.news/AatqdhTwfQ-6ebnwSwolnHA In Wisconsin, Poached Burgers Have Been A Staple For Over 100 Years From the steamed burgers of Connecticut to the olive burgers of Michigan, the United States has no shortage of interesting takes on this beloved sandwich. But over in America's Dairyland, there is another way of cooking hamburgers that you're not likely to find anywhere else in the country. For it is in the state of Wisconsin that, for over a century, they've been poaching their burgers. In the historic town of Prairie du Chien, Pete's Hamburger Stand has been serving up poached hamburgers for over 100 years. Originally, founder Pete Gokey cooked his burgers the way everyone else did at the start of the 20th century: in large pans. In order to keep his burgers from drying out between customers, Gokey added water to the pan, allowing the burgers to slowly stew in their own fat. Customers would return exclaiming that they liked the burgers cooked in water much better than the standard pan frying. From then on, poached burgers became a staple in Wisconsin. Joe Rouer's Bar, another poached burger institution just outside of Green Bay, has a special seasoning they put on their burgers and they add water to the pans throughout the day, creating a concentrated beef gravy that lends tremendous flavor to the patties. Though we would highly recommend the journey, you don't need to trek out to these burger joints to experience poached burgers. It's something you can very easily do at home, in the comfort of your own kitchen. All you need to achieve a poached burger at home is a deep-sided skillet, preferably made out of cast iron. And as you won't — at least we think you won't — be cooking up hundreds of burgers a day in the same richly flavored water bath, you will need to use some beef stock in order to get the most flavor out of your burger. Another thing to note, if you want to replicate a true Wisconsin poached burger, you'll need to add a good amount of onions to your poaching liquid. However, this is not required. Additional seasonings to suit your taste are also optional. Over medium-high heat, add enough stock to bathe, but not completely cover the burger, and bring it to a good simmer. Add the onions, if you're using them, and cook them down until they become soft, translucent, and sweet. Next, add the burger patty (and any seasonings if you're using them) and cook on one side until the edges are no longer pink. Flip and cook a few minutes more. It is all but impossible to end up with a dry, unappetizing burger using this method. What you should get is a tender patty that's dripping with succulent juices and a beautiful beefy flavor. Biting into one will reveal why Wisconsinites have been in love with these burgers for over 100 years ... and likely leave you wanting more. sounds yummy... I'll have to try this.
  3. I actually liked a few songs Donny did when he attempted to present a more 'mature' image. My favorite was this song, which I think is fairly sexy (in a Mormon sort of way, you know...)

  7. I thought the NCIS: LA finale was okay, but it felt a bit anti-climactic after such a solid season. I think an over-the-top wedding would've had terrific comedic potential. LL Cool J has joined NCIS: HAWAII for next season.

  9. How one indie funeral home in Greenpoint is trying to repackage death After two decades in video production, where her clients included fashion and cosmetics brands, Erica Hill did something radical in November 2021: She opened a funeral home in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It wasn’t just a career-180 for Hill; it was an unusual move, period. Funeral homes have been declining in numbers in New York and nationwide for decades. “If you had told me 10 years ago that this is what I’d be doing, I’d tell you you were absolutely insane,” said Hill, one morning last month in her funeral home, called Sparrow. “I have no interest in dying,” she said, “but I've had enough loss in my life that it's just unfortunately a reality and every single person on this earth is gonna die.” (Damn! No spoiler alert?!?) story continues... https://gothamist.com/news/how-one-indie-funeral-home-in-greenpoint-is-trying-to-repackage-death

  12. She’s got two left feet — but she made it work. A viral video captured the moment a couple’s Labrador stole the show during their nuptials after the groom performed an adorable “father-dogter” dance with their beloved pooch, Rosy. Rosy stole the show at the April wedding in Philadelphia when the groom, Ben, picked up the pooch, cradling her as they danced to ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” at the reception, drawing cheers and applause from those attending. The bride, Julie Filreis, filmed the sweet, two-minute serenade, saying their loving pup is definitely a “daddy’s girl.” They got the idea for a “father-dogter” dance during a holiday party when Ben picked up Rosy and danced with her in his arms. Julie told Storyful that after seeing the adorable interaction, they decided to dedicate a dance to Rosy at their wedding.

  14. These stories don't always end so heartwarmingly... A California father died after being struck by a car Thursday night while helping a family of ducks cross a busy road. The horrifying crash took place at Stanford Ranch Road and Park Drive in the city of Rocklin, about 22 miles from Sacramento. William Wimsatt, a 12-year-old boy who witnessed the kindhearted stranger’s actions, said the man had stepped out of his car to help the ducks avoid traffic. “He got out of the car and was shooing the ducks and everyone was clapping because he was being really nice,” William said. The young boy took photos of the man, who has not been identified, with his cellphone as he and the ducks crossed in front of his mother’s car. “He helped them get up over the curb because all the little baby duckies were having trouble and then he walked in front of our car,” the boy recounted. After the ducks made it safely to the other side of the road, William said, onlookers in their cars applauded the good Samaritan’s actions. “My mom rolled down the window and said, ‘Good job, good job,’ and I said, ‘Good job’ to him too.” Right after that, William said, the man was struck by a car that seemingly came out of nowhere. “I didn’t see the car actually hit him. All I remember is the sound and then him flying across the intersection,” he said. “His shoes and one of his socks were right in front of our car.” Another woman, Summer Peterson, told KOVR that her child also saw the tragedy unfold. “They were saying, ‘Oh, it’s so cute. It’s so nice of him.’ And then all of a sudden he was hit by a car,” she told the outlet at a makeshift memorial for the man on Friday. After the accident, William’s mother got out of her car and comforted the man’s children, who were sitting in their own car and witnessed the crash. A makeshift memorial — full of rubber duckies and flowers — was set up on the corner where the accident occurred. William said he hopes people remember the man for his kindness. “He was the only person to get out of the car and try and help them and probably the nicest person in the entire area. It’s not fair,” he said. Police are still investigating the cause of the fatality. The driver, a 17-year-old girl, is cooperating with authorities and is not currently facing any charges. DUI is not suspected, KOVR reported. https://nypost.com/2023/05/22/california-man-fatally-hit-by-car-while-helping-ducks-cross-busy-road/
  15. A beefcake model was arrested in San Diego just over 6 years ago for a string of burglaries that began in Greenwich, Conn. David Byers, then 34, of Solana Beach, Calif., evaded authorities for days before he was tracked down in a cross-country search. The hunky suspect, who robbed a Chase bank in Riverside, CT, twice in two days before robbing a Citgo gas station in Cos Cob, CT, was arrested without incident.

  20. Bayside resident Roger Bow was honored by White Castle as an inductee to the restaurant chain’s Food Cravers Hall of Fame. Bow, one of 11 inductees of the class of 2022, was selected after submitting an essay about the important role that White Castle has played in his life. Bow and the other honorees each received a free trip to White Castle’s home office in Columbus, Ohio, where they were also provided with a free tour of the facility. They were given complimentary accommodations and meals during their stay. In addition to receiving a commemorative plaque recognizing their achievement, each inductee will have their stories shown on the restaurant’s slider boxes later this year. “It’s definitely a milestone in my life that I’ll never forget,” Bow said. “White Castle has meant so much to me. It’s been in my life pretty much since I was a kid. [My wife and I] felt like royalty [at the ceremony].” According to Bow, White Castle was the first taste of classic American food that he experienced, as his mother and grandmother would frequently prepare customary Asian dishes. He grew up living about five blocks away from one of the restaurants in Jackson Heights. (recently closed) His father would often surprise him and his sisters with White Castle when he came home from operating his Chinese food restaurant. “My dad always said the mark of a good restaurant was to not only bring out great-tasting food from the kitchen but to make sure that that food tasted the same each and every time a customer came back for it,” Bow said at the ceremony. “The first visit leaves an impression, but it’s the subsequent visits that make a customer a devout diner and fan. Consistency is one of the hallmarks of White Castle: Consistency of service, taste, quality, and tradition… that’s why we all come back.” After moving to Flushing, he would frequent the location at 213-17 Northern Blvd. in Bayside. When he turned 15 and got his working papers, Bow’s first job ended up being at that location during the summer of 1977. “It’s definitely a milestone in my life that I’ll never forget,” Bow said. “White Castle has meant so much to me. It’s been in my life pretty much since I was a kid. [My wife and I] felt like royalty [at the ceremony].” “I really liked working there because I got to see how busy that White Castle was,” Bow said. “And I got to see the crave from the other perspective. The crave is real!” While attending college at Fordham University, Bow and his friends would frequent the White Castle located across the street from the campus. Bow said that many people he went to the restaurant with came from different states and areas without a White Castle. He ended up introducing them to the restaurant, whether they were from Pennsylvania, Connecticut or New Jersey. He enjoyed seeing their reactions to trying the food. Just as his father passed along a love of White Castle to him, so too has Bow to his own kids. As his children grew up, he’d often take them there after scout meetings and ballgames and for occasional Friday night treats. Bow said there are a few items on the menu that he tends to get on a regular basis. Among his go-to items are two jalapeno cheeseburgers, two regular sliders, onion rings, chicken rings, two fish sandwiches, and/or shrimp nibblers. When it comes to getting dessert, his go-to food there is cheesecake on a stick. “Cravers Hall of Fame day is a magical day for us here at White Castle,” White Castle Vice President Jamie Richardson said. “We love to see the group grow, and every year our 10,000 team members are nourished and humbled by the amazing stories our inductees share. We hear something new every time and it means so much to know how people connect with our family business through some of the most memorable moments in their lives.” Founded in 1921, White Castle is the first fast-food hamburger chain in the United States. The family-owned business owns and operates more than 350 locations across the country, in addition to a retail division providing its food at supermarkets. https://qns.com/2023/05/bayside-man-white-castle-food-cravers-hall-fame/
  21. It’s not the wurst idea. Oscar Mayer announced Wednesday that it was renaming its world-famous Wienermobile after 87 years. A new fleet of “Frankmobiles” will hit the streets this week as part of a once-in-a-century rebranding that the company says “pays homage” to its new 100% Beef Franks. “The Wienermobile is a beloved American icon that has been sparking smiles and driving craveability for our iconic delicious wieners for nearly 100 years,” Stephanie Vance, the company’s associate brand manager, said in a statement. The goal of the revamped mobile hot dog — which debuted in 1936 at the General Body Assembly plant in Chicago — is to discourage people “from taking things too seriously,” the company said. The saucy new hot dog-shaped cars will feature new decals that urge hungry passersby to “please do not lick,” as well as Frank Whistles, formerly known as Wiener Whistles. Frankmobile drivers will now be known as Frankfurters, ditching their old title as Hotdoggers. Additionally, the Frankfurters will be handing out coupons for a free pack of hot dogs for glizzy gobblers named any iteration of Frank as part of its “Franks for Franks” promotion. The rebrand comes three months after thieves ripped the catalytic converter from one of the iconic Weinermobiles when it was parked in a Las Vegas parking lot the night before a tour stop.
