It sounds very much like the implications for Italians in the hierarchies of society depending on how "high/low" on the boot one is born. There are skin tone differences and at huge dialect differences (the dialect differences exist even until today). I was and still am confused about how Indians and Pakistanis feel about the difference between the peoples. I know that it was decided in large part on a religious component but I never knew if there were other components.

I think that was their defense. They had an unreasonable but sincerely held belief that their lives were in immediate danger. From the outside looking in it may have been that their parents posed no immediate threat, however based on their past life experience they held that sincere belief. And, according to the film, at least one juror would not have voted to convict had they been allowed to hear some of the evidence regarding their home life that had been excluded.
