PARADISE, Butte County — More than 30,000 people fled for their lives Thursday as a late-season wildfire swept across this town in the Sierra foothills, incinerating numerous homes and businesses and prompting desperate rescues of residents trapped inside buildings and on clogged evacuation routes.

The blaze exploded to more than 18,000 acres in just the first eight hours, adding to a catastrophic two years of wildfires in California that have raised new questions about how the state will cope with a warmer and drier climate.

Smoke turned the daytime sky black in the community of 27,000 that sits 15 miles east of Chico and 80 miles north of Sacramento. Authorities raced to evacuate a hospital, which caught fire, while calling in hundreds of firefighters from across the region to attack the flames from the ground and by air.

Among the structures lost to the flames were a McDonald’s, a Mormon church, a Black Bear Diner and the town’s wood welcome sign. Streams of residents hurried out of town, inching along the few available routes. As the day wore on, family members and friends searched for scores of missing people.

The cause of the fire, which ignited at 6:30 a.m., was under investigation. Authorities released no immediate information about the extent of the damage, injuries or potential fatalities.

The blaze, named the Camp Fire because of its proximity to Camp Creek Road near Highway 70 in the Feather River Canyon, was scorching several areas within Paradise, which is home to many retirees. By Thursday afternoon, it was moving west toward Chico. Acting Gov. Gavin Newsom, filling in while Gov. Jerry Brown traveled out of state, declared a state of emergency in Butte County.

Firefighters spent the morning trying to evacuate trapped Paradise residents while creating firebreaks within the town and even moving some people to empty parking lots.

“In the past few years, just the way fires have moved, firefighters have had to help with evacuations before they can go back in to put out the fire,” said Lynne Tolmachoff, a spokeswoman with the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire.

After much speculation, the “Breaking Bad” movie will begin filming soon in Albuquerque.

According to the New Mexico Film Office, the movie “Greenbrier” will begin production in the Duke City mid-November through early February.

The film office wouldn’t confirm or deny that the project was a “Breaking Bad” film.

But a source close to the project confirmed the production.

According to the logline, “Greenbrier” tracks the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom.

“We are happy to welcome ‘Greenbrier’ and Sony Studios to New Mexico,” said New Mexico State Film Office Director Nick Maniatis. “For years, we’ve built up the film industry in New Mexico and strengthened our film incentives; now, we’re seeing success after success for the film industry in our state.”

According to the N.M. Film Office, the production will employ approximately 300 N.M. crew members, 16 N.M. actors and approximately 450 N.M. background talent.

This is the first project for Vince Gilligan – who created “Breaking Bad” and co-created the spinoff, “Better Call Saul” – after signing a three-year deal with Sony Pictures Television in July.

The move to stay with Sony comes at a time when A-list showrunners are being courted by Netflix and other streaming services for production pacts.

Details on which characters will be returning from the TV series to the film have not been released.

The Emmy Award-winning series was set and filmed in Albuquerque for six years.

“Breaking Bad” is the story of Walter H. White, played by Bryan Cranston, a struggling high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with advanced lung cancer at the beginning of the series.

He turns to a life of crime, producing and selling methamphetamine with a former student, Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul, with the aim of securing his family’s financial future before he dies.

The series is a cultural juggernaut – 10 years after it aired its first episode.

The New Mexico film industry and Sony Pictures Television have worked together on both “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.”

  3. I have Life Alert. When I fall again that will be the end. I'll call the rescue squad and have them take me to the ER. Then I'll insist on going to a home and have the county conservator take care of me.

If you have a life alert you don’t have to call. You simply need to push a button. With your luck and doom the battery will probably be dead.

  4. No doctor will endlessly refill prescriptions without physically seeing a patient. What do you do then?

    ~Boomer~

Exactly. Typically it’s one year. Oftentimes less. Time seems to be running out for a solution.

  5. I agree. Most people at one point in their life depend on the kindness of others, I helped a woman in my building for 3 years. My concern is the "lost packages" from the mail place especially if it's medicine he needs.

Absolutely. But @Avalon Would benefit from Amazon’s keyless delivery. Since he’s home all the time he would know when the package was going to be delivered and it wouldn’t scare him to death when someone arrived at his front door.

  6. Contact Amazon and tell them the items never arrived. If the rep won't refund you, ask to speak to a supervisor. Here's the link to use chat:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/contact-us/general-questions.html

Or you can call them at 1 (888) 280-4331.

I would report the multiple missing items to the mailbox store. You're paying them for this service, and if there's a theft issue, they should know.

You don’t even have to call Amazon. They’ll call you. Amazon has the most customer centric business probably in the world. Simply click on your order, then click where’s my order, and then click call me. You should also be using order tracking which will send you an email or text alert when your package shipped and when it’s delivered.

  7. It might be easier for your landlord to have things delivered to him, mail and packages, instead of going to the mailbox place. Perhaps ask him what is easiest for him.

Throw in the grocery runs, and he's more of a caretaker than he is a landlord. What would happen if the landlord changed jobs or if he's the owner, sold the building?

  8. @marylander1940 Publishing my PM's to the public forum is the nothing short of who you are. YOU, the one being, who reports escorts on social media because they escort when they reject your approach and God only knows why these people might reject you. But for me, I stand by everything which I have have ever shared privately with ANY other member here. Including you.

It's clear to me, you're nothing more than a vindictive soul desperately seeking validation.

I hope you now feel you have.
