Here's how I define sensual and erotic:
 
Sensual. I'm naked, they are most likely still wearing shorts, undies, jock. Maybe those will fall off during the course of the session. Generally ends happy and most likely without mutual touch.
 
Erotic. I'm naked and the masseur is naked. Masseur is not shy about brushing up against an arm or leg and uses his entire body during the session (especially fun in more of the Thai-styled massages). Mutual touching is more likely to happen, usually towards the end of the massage and just before it ends happy (sometimes for both me and the masseur).
 
I've only had a couple massages go beyond what I've described in erotic. One with a masseur who would move to oral, but this was after a couple of initial sessions (and, sadly, he's no longer with us). The other would gently caress and kiss my body all over...and I mean all over. Never had a session lead to sex and not sure how I'd handle that.
 
One last thing: it really frustrates me to no end when a masseur advertises erotic and doesn't even take off a shirt, let alone the shorts. I've been very tempted to reach back out and let him know I know otherwise, but have decided to take my business elsewhere.

I think the reason why so many people say “YMMV” is because a masseur is not an escort. If you want a guarantee for more than the standard HE then hire an escort.
 
I’ve had sessions with “sensual only “ providers which became what I and most people would consider erotic and vice versa.
 
I like going into a session knowing that we will both be nude, and there will be mutual touching and release. I always confirm that with a provider before booking. Anything more is based on chemistry. For me that’s part of the turn on.

My preference is something more symmetrical.
 
I don't mind a little improvisation from time to time, but nothing worse than a massage that never feels "balanced" because the masseur lost track of what to work on next.

Decided to ask directly. He makes no distinction between sensual and erotic, so don't ever expect him to fully undress.

I haven't had many instances of a session starting late or ending too early...but I have had a couple masseurs who smelled like they just came from Korean BBQ or The Stinking Rose. Ick.
 
I once had a session and upon walking into the apartment was greeted with an overpowering smell of recently cooked food. Masseur apologized and quickly lit a couple candles, but it did no good. He then proceeded to burp throughout the first half of the session. Another ick.

I would not pay $150 for a basic massage knowing that that is all it was going to be. You can spend a lot less than that and get a decent completely therapeutic massage and don't have to worry about ambiguity. Seems like the price increase should have come with some explanation if you are a repeat.

Also, remember that these guys are guys too. For some, they can 'perform' no matter who the client is but for others , if they don't have chemistry it's not going to work. At the same can be said for clients. I have hired different guys across different price ranges. For me, number 1, the massage has to be good. If it's good and the price is right, I'll rebook. If not, even with a HE, I won't. I need to feel that when I get up off the table 'WOW!'
