  1. What other box is there for them to check? The people who are wrong here are the American ignoramuses who think Asian means East Asian. It's a big continent, especially considering there's no geographic reason for carving Europe out other than a desire to claim superiority. And Thailand is in Southeast Asia and isn't contiguous with the others. Vietnam also is in Southeast Asia, not East Asia. Go check a map.
  2. So? Are you saying they don't have a point?
  3. There's always been a per post limit on how many images can be included but the number of images allowed may have changed. I don't remember. As with the character limit on text in a post, you can just add more posts.
  4. The problem is the idea that only certain kinds of books count. Graphic novels, manga, comics and car magazines count, too. Reading is reading. If kids want to read Wilder and their parents are okay with it, that's fine. It'd be nice if they discussed the issues, but I'm not holding my breath.
  5. Schools pick books for pedagogical reasons. I guess no one gives a shit what effect this has on the groups depicted, on what other students think is okay to think about them, or the further damage that can be done by a racist, incompetent or insensitive teacher. Otherwise, an F on reading comprehension. The books aren't going to be withdrawn from sale or banned. I don't know about school libraries, but they most certainly will stay in public libraries because parents get to manage their children's reading.
  6. She should issue a press release or something and point it out every time Trump calls her Pochahontas.
  7. No, I'm not at all surprised. There's many more possibilities for clients and hookups on Fire Island and the Hamptons and people with a lot of money to fling around in the Hamptons. They're going where the client density is, whereas a trip to a single client anywhere else is likely isolated and not worth the time and transportation costs.
  8. I know, but I doubt the victim knew that. And investigating and pressing for it is more than the police sometimes do. Female victims have been disbelieved, questioned about their behavior and dismissed, especially when perpetrator and victim know each other. Perhaps it was the victim's reaction to the possibility he was raped that convinced them it was rape and not some kind of personal gripe. Perhaps the drugs didn't work the way they were expected. I don't believe the contrition either. This was calculated and predatory.
  9. I disagree with your analysis, but your suggestion is a good one. Instead of clinging to outdated books calling Black people darkies and repeating the only good Indian is a dead Indian, let's have schools teach books like Octavia Butler's Kindred, in which a Black woman and her white husband are sent back in time to before the Civil War where she repeatedly rescues the white slaveowner's son who is her ancestor.
  10. It was the name of a fucking award. Gosh, you guys are Chicken Little snowflakes.
  11. Some teachers treat it sensitively. Some teachers have black students read the parts that use racial epithets for the class. You do understand why that's traumatic and inappropriate?
  12. I still wouldn't go see it.
  13. Girl at my high school: Gay Fellowes.
  14. Me too, and I don't even have a cock!
  15. I don't think there are enough samples to reliably test for it, plus it has no bearing on tribal recognition. For reasons having nothing to do with Trump, I wish she would acknowledge that she's not whatever tribe she claimed because she doesn't meet tribal standards, which she respects, and that it is a family story that she can't verify which she shared without thinking about the implications.
  16. I was going to ask "aren't nuts central to male fertility?" but I see I was beaten to the punch, more or less.
  17. Not really. Much of his former female fanbase doesn't want to ever see a movie of his again. I'm not sure there are enough male fans who care. He might be able to get supporting roles, but his days as a lead may be over.
  18. No one is calling for Little House to be banned. And the issue is the name of an award meant to reward inclusiveness in children's literature. How would you like it if as a gay man you were nominated for an award named after noted homophobe and author Orson Scott Card?
  19. Huckleberry Finn shouldn't be taught in school because that normalizes the use of the term ni**er, but it's not clear to what extent it normalizes racism and to what extent it describes or critiques it, whereas where Little House stands is clear.
  20. Oh please. It's a compendium of settler ideology. You're perfectly entitled not to be bothered, but it's certainly reasonable for a Native person to view it as an endorsement of theft and genocide. And if settler views of Natives weren't racist, what would you call them?
  21. Administering ED pills on top of ketamine and alcohol? What a prince. It does suggest this might not be his first time. I also wonder how this got uncovered. How did the victim know he was raped if he was drunk and drugged? I'm glad he reported and the police investigated and there was independent corroboration, but that doesn't always happen.
  22. Yeah, it's not possible to embed videos from Twitter or Facebook or gifs.
  23. Thumbs up for the second paragraph.
  24. @Drained Empty, I really appreciate your post, but South Asians are Asian too. Did you mean East Asians? It doesn't help when we East Asians (I'm assuming that's what you are) internalize the US propensity for considering East Asia to stand in for all of Asia. This is also where I note that the continent as a geographic concept is Eurasia, not Asia. That wasn't an Asian choice, though, and it was driven by European belief in their superiority.
