  1. Predators predate. It's what they do.
  2. I've actually used algebra at work. Understanding algebraic concepts also helped me understand what actuaries said and other consequences of the time value of money, such as that a decrease in the yield on debt instruments leads to an increase in price for existing bonds and vice versa.
  3. Ha, I saw the title of the thread and assumed it was about Otto von Bismarck.
  4. And you wonder why you get those kind of responses when you don't even recognize you are the bitter one, not me, based on the content of your posts. People who are full of themselves are unlikable. You just proved you still are. So saltiness will continue!
  5. Kevin Spacey was ostracized in part because of behavior while he was starring in a Broadway role, but it's true his fame isn't due to Broadway.
  6. It cooled off and became less humid over the weekend here, which is great because it was very humid as well as hot.
  7. Yes, someone I know who is half Chinese said the closest the test could get was East Asian, not a specific ethnicity.

  13. Cat on vacuum cleaner. From what's on YouTube, you might get the idea that the purpose of robotic vacuum cleaners is to serve as pet transportation/toy. https://twitter.com/EmrgencyKittens/status/1007650221302611970?s=09

  16. More on the irrelevancy of DNA testing to Native recognition: https://twitter.com/NativeApprops/status/1015797673553793024?s=09 Start of thread: It’s not that they’re not “widely accepted.” There is *NO* federally recognized Tribal Nation in the US that will accept an ancestral DNA test as proof for citizenship. A few tribes have used familial DNA tests (paternity/maternity DNA tests) to confirm parents/family for enrollment. But that is a whole different test and whole different ballgame. Not a single tribal nation is going to take your 23andme or ancestry dot com kit seriously. And the fact that folks still think these tests mean anything in terms of tribal affiliation, citizenship, or enrollment at this point is so frustrating. The stupid ads don’t help. An ancestry DNA test can’t “prove” anything. The results vary widely from company to company depending on databases and technology. The sample for “Native” DNA is tiny compared to other parts of the world and doesn’t take into account HUGE amounts of diversity w/in the population Sorry, that DNA test doesn't make you Indigenous But notice all the dates on these links and articles are from *years* ago. Native people have been explaining over and over why this conversation is a non-starter (and frankly offensive) and clearly no one cares to listen to the actual communities this affects. Disconnection from actual Native heritage is a real result of settler colonialism. Fake family stories of Native heritage are also a real result of settler colonialism. Neither is fixed by a DNA test. Also DNA testing can't match you with a tribe, as well as the possibility that it's wrong or won't be replicated by another company.
  17. True, but they can make an unpleasant splash anyway. I agree the best thing to do is ignore someone new who's clearly trying to stir the pot.
  18. I dislike internal inconsistencies in posts and you pissed me off early in your tenure here with your defense of your smarts with your reference to your classical education, so I'm motivated to be pissed off every time your posts are inconsistent and sloppy and to point out the inconsistencies. If you had not been so full of yourself, especially as a newbie, I wouldn't be as critical of this particular post.
  19. No, actually that's not so strange other than it's written in an illogical non sequitur style. What I don't get are those who come in metaphorical guns blazing seemingly seeking to stir up controversy.
  20. Which leads me to feel some kind of way about them. If there's an actual question and someone needs help, I get it, but otherwise I wind up feeling skeptical of their bona fides. There's social awkwardness and there's cluelessness.
  21. I would really like not to be awake so early, but some new medication I'm taking seems to affect both getting to sleep and how long I can sleep. It's decreased my fibromyalgia pain noticeably, so it's worth it, but I still would rather not have such an out of whack sleeping pattern.
  22. I don't think it's too harsh considering @pubic_assistance acknowledged that the concept of continents belongs to the realm of geography. Thais are also noticeably different looking from Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and Vietnamese. And Vietnam and Thailand are on a peninsula distinct from East Asia (China, Korea and Japan).
  23. Yes, they're all South Asian.
  24. I have a hard time going to bed early or I crash for a few hours early in the evening and then can't get back to sleep, but I can more easily do tasks like cleaning in the morning and if I've had enough sleep I'm more patient and fresh and am better at things that require concentration in the morning. The later in the day it gets, the less I want to talk to anyone else on the phone because I have less time to address my priorities. And by then I'm usually exhausted. Also I don't usually sleep late anymore but getting going in the morning is hard for me.
