  1. The IMHO did not go unnoticed! I thought his performance was spot on and I even liked the movie....a lot. Said at the end that the writer should get the academy award. Then saw it was Aaron Sorkin....imho one of the best screenwriters in the business.

I wouldn't be surprised if it gets overlooked but even if it gets some nominations, I'd take any comers for a bet that says it will not win a single Oscar.

  2. The real reason they did that: The Globes are a star-f*cking joke. Always have been, always will be.

The show is good now because the hosts know that. Go, Ricky Gervais!

No, The Martian producers asked to be included in Comedy/Musical category figuring the competition was lighter. They were right. Can't blame everything on the silly Hollywood Foreign Press.

  3. Don't overlook Michael Fassbender in Steve Jobs.

I hated the movie so, yes, I am overlooking Michael Fassbaender in STEVE JOBS. I like him but this isn't one of his best performances, IMHO. But I'm sure he'll get nominated. Although I've yet to meet an Oscar voter who liked the film. He should have been nominated for SHAME.

  4. "That's what I have the WSJ and the NYTimes for."

Yes, thank goodness Rupert Murdoch came along to save the WSJ and give it a rightward tilt. Damn librul media!

Spoken like someone who has never read the WSJ. Great, straight down the line reporting (just like the Times), better cultural and sports coverage now that Murdoch owns the papers. The editorial page is slightly right of center -- just as it's been for the 40 years I've been reading it. That had nothing to do with Murdoch. Heck, but just keep to your pre-conceived notions.

  5. I did. Did my research and its helps that the store just dropped the price by $300 yesterday. If you don't mind, may I message you when it arrives for pointers, etc. regarding the calibration and other miscellaneous setup "stuff"?

Absolutely. Please do. Although be aware, color is a really individual choice! But I've been playing with the settings for around 10 days so I hope I have some good pointers!

    Enjoy!

  6. Matt Damon gives one of the best performances of the year (along with Michael B. Jordan, Michael Caine, Tom Courtenay, and Eddie Redmayne) in this Ridley Scott film. Some are put off thinking it's about Martians but the Martian is actually Matt Damon's character. I thought it was a beautiful film filled with great performances (from Chastain, Daniel, Ejiofor, Bean, even Sebastian Stan who I didn't recognize at first) with a first rate script and stunning photography. I loved every minute of it.

  7. I'd cut the cord if not for Turner Classic Movies and MSNBC.

These days, 95% of what's on Turner Classic Movies is available for free on the internet, youtube, torrent sites. etc. As for MSNBC (or Fox or CNN), I'd rather have sex with an ugly woman that spending two seconds watching that kind of drivel. That's what I have the WSJ and the NYTimes for.

  8. After a head spinning afternoon (OLED? I just learned about the existence of 4K for God's sake). It came down to the Vizio vs Samsung. A high end Vizio with a 240 refresh rate is about $800 to $1,200 less than the comparable Samsung. I need to read up a bit more, but Cnet raves about the Vizio M series, so I'm pretty much leaning that way.

You can't go wrong with the M series from Vizio. Ultra 4K is just amazing when you play a blu ray and it upscales regular DVD stuff as well. I wish I had bought the large one last year when I upgraded my screening room TV but I had no idea it could be that good. Go for it!

  9. MrMiniver, your comment came right on time! I'm about to step out the door to check them out and will definitely look at the Vizio.

Vizio, for the price point, is really worth it. Almost 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of Samsung. Since the technology is so new I wouldn't spring for the more expensive high end stuff until the dust settles in 3-4 years. Look up the reviews for the Vizio M series. Excellent.

  10. And here I thought this was about someone cutting off TV in all forms, kinda like I did.

    Not even close.

I could never do THAT. There's just way too much good stuff on TV, both UK and USA. Much more interesting that what is in the cinema or in books (by far).

  11. I've actually been looking at these, a 4K Ultra. The prices have dropped like crazy since last year. I'm not very tech savvy, when it mentions web browsing, does it mean it will play videos from any web site? That would solve the AMC issue for me.

Earlier this year I bought a new Samsung 60" HDTV for my screening room after my old 52" crapped out. I have a 40" Samsung HDTV in my den. I was pleased with my new purchase until .... I rented a house for Thanksgiving and they had a 50" Vizio 4K UltraHD. I was blown away. We watched ALL ABOUT EVE and THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and I felt that Bette Davis and Anthony Hopkins were in my living room.

So I replaced my den TV with a Vizio 50" 4K UltraHD. I love it. I will say it takes a TON of tweaking when you get it out of the box. If you just turn it on and watch cable you will be DISAPPOINTED. There are lots of tips about settings online but you really also need to buy a blu ray calibration disc which will take you step by step on how to get the color to your liking and what settings to touch and which ones not to touch.

I also have surround sound in my screening room which I love but bought a great sound bar for the den TV. Whatever you do, don't rely on the TV sound system. They suck.

As for torrents and file sharing ... I'd just join one of the groups like tehparadox.com or bolt.cd .. you will find a wealth of material there. For most people file sharing is the way to go instead of torrents as it's both easier and no risk. You don't have to buy a VPN or any of that. You'll want to join one of the providers with premium accounts to make downloading faster and easier. I'm happy to answer any questions about this. Cheers!

  12. I would be interested in hearing from the august members of this forum how they have have cut the Cable TV cord.

My provider (Comcast) won't allow customers to take advantage of newer cheaper rates if they "downgrade". So basically they make it next to impossible to save money by reducing services.

I'm tempted to cut out all TV and just go with high speed Internet.

How do you access "broadcast" TV via Internet? I don't feel like climbing on the roof to install antenna.

Happy New Year! Let's make 2016 the year of cord cutting!

I download everything -- either by torrent or private file sharing sites -- I get things quicker, without commercials, in better quality. The only thing I don't get by having gotten rid of cable/satellite is news and sports but that's changing to so I don't miss it. Plus I can piggy back off my neighbors in the country and their satellite. In NYC, in my building, you have have no choice but to have it because it's built into your assessment.

I'm happy to be rid of the cable cord and I save a ton of money.

  13. I'd saved the quote to reply before reading on but I'll second the examples already cited. Not having had a significant other while I was in the workforce it wasn't an issue for me but being casual and open about one's sexual orientation can be as simple as using the appropriate personal pronoun rather than dancing around the issue and using 'they'. In my case, the closest it came was having to handle questions as to why I wasn't married, and I typically avoided the issue.

I completely agree with you on that. Perhaps I misunderstood the original comment which I took to be more "sexual" in nature. Those kinds of generic questions should be answered the same way, gay or straight, IMHO.

  14. I think your conflating "sexuality/orientation" and "sexual acts" here @MrMiniver - two entirely different subjects. For the first - sexuality/orientation - as has already been pointed out, one can be open and casual about it in the work place - both gay and straight. I don't think TR or anyone else is waving rainbow flags and throwing glitter about the office, but the examples given show how one can casually be open about one's sexuality. Would you disagree with how they were answered? Also, if you cannot imagine people talking about the other subject - sex - in the workplace, come down to financial district in NYC. The graphic descriptions of sexual encounters I have overheard or been told directly (ugh!) would make Larry Flynt blush. Inappropriate - sure, but it happens -- in the office, at the bar with colleagues -- I don't necessarily want to hear it but I also don't want to be pegged as the prude. I avoid when I can and when I can't - I grin and bear it and somebody usually steers the conversation away from the subject at hand. It is what it is and I don't know an office where it doesn't happen.

I have no doubt that you are correct but I still would find that kind of talk in a professional setting inappropriate. If I did that at my university, I'd be brought up on charges. Of course, college settings are VERY TOUCHY these days.

  15. Lol...good ones. Here are some others:

"We are having a holiday party in appreciation of your services, bring your wife"

"I'd be happy to bring my BF, would that work?"

"My wife and the family, had a great weekend, what did you do?"

"My pups and I went to the beach with a guy I met on airplane ride from Miami"

@MrMiniver , I very much respect your choices. Nothing wrong with your approach. Different folks, different strokes.

I have no problem with the first exchange. I think the second exchange would be inappropriate in an office setting or any professional setting.

  16. "Doesn't your wife get sick of you traveling all the time for meetings?"

"Husband actually, but no he doesn't mind"

    "That's a great watch"

"It was a gift from my wife/husband for our anniversary last year"

I could go on but you get the idea...

That's awfully tepid. I wouldn't call that being "open about your sexual orientation." I got from the original comment that we were talking about actual sexual comments which I would find inappropriate in a workplace.

  17. In the case of serial rapist Speaker Dennis Hastert I guess it was a combination of being a fat closeted homosexual, and feeling the power of getting away with it...

I find this post absolutely disgusting. There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that Dennis Hastert is or was a serial rapist of any kind. There is not evidence of him involved in any wrongdoing concerning boys or girls or animals for that matter. To make that kind of accusation without any evidence is truly disgusting. I hope when someone makes it against you based on the same information that you find yourself being defended.

As a legal scholar at my school said, "Dennis Hastert was convicted of withdrawing his own money from his own bank account and that should give everyone pause."
