English is basically a first language there. It's taught in schools from a young age. It's still the global language of business and they prepare their children for that from a young age. Frankly, Emiratis speak better english than most Americans I know. Chatter of being hired by royals always seems suspect to me. As a tourist, Dubai is an interesting place to visit for a few days. Like Vegas, it gets old quickly. I'd also recommend staying a little longer, renting a car and driving the hour to Abu Dhabi to get a more 'real' feel for the culture. As for being gay in Dubai, I treat it as I do anywhere I travel: I don't wear my sexuality on my sleeve.
