Netflix: The Politician, starring Ben Platt

Finished season 1 of The Politician. It has quite a diverse cast covering the LGBTQ community & several nationalities. Also, no marriage works in this show. It either ends in divorce or there’s no 2 parents around. So many family issues. Some of the episodes directed by Helen Hunt were well done, others just make you scratch your head and say, WTF. Example, the episode where a new teenage male character is introduced who all he wants to do is masturbate. And, everyone seems to know he’s doing it. Relevance? To show that a Freshman in HS is only interested in sex & not who becomes the school’s president. The final episode takes you from the West Coast to NYC. It sets the stage for Season 2 (if there is one). Two famous actresses are introduced who will come in contact with Payton Hobart and his posse. I couldn’t help but notice the similarities of Ben Platt’s character to Evan Hansen. His character deals with similar issues such as suicide, lies, confusion, and a mother who makes him feel very special even when he fucks up. -
The Politician is a new 8 episode show on Netflix. It stars Ben Platt as Payton Hobart a wealthy HS student running for class president. His goal is to attend Harvard and become President of the US. His mom is played by Gwyneth Paltrow who has a famous tennis star as her lover. Ryan Murphy has put together another HS show & includes some familiar faces in the cast like Jessica Lange & Bob Balaban. Ben Platt made a name for himself in Dear Evan Hansen where he took home a Tony for Best Actor. Ben also has a hit album out & sings a few of his songs in The Politician. I’m a big fan of Ben Platt and have been enjoying the show. https://www.npr.org/2019/09/27/764591532/the-politician-digs-for-the-drama-in-high-school-politics

@Pensant. Where do you go to meet guys? Or, do you already have a bf?

@latbear4blk, Glad to hear you’re having good hookups on Grindr. I’ve been using it for several years and, like you, it’s worked out well. Unfortunately, there are more issues now than years ago. So many fake profiles. Look out for the ones that only say, “White-Average-Single”. Also, as already mentioned, the fake taps are far too many. What I do is click on the star and see the distance from other saved profiles. Usually, they’re coming from hundreds of miles away. There’s no sense in blocking them as they’ll be back the next day using a different picture & profile. If you can live with all these fakes, Grindr is still the best APP to meet local guys. Wishing you continued success with the APP. Cooper

Have any of you received a message on Grindr from a military man looking to start a relationship? He’ll send several love messages and say he’ll be returning from Afghanistan soon... It was fun until he wanted to send me gold that he confiscated in enemy tunnels... On a positive note, I’ve met some very nice local men on Grindr.

@BaronArtz. Yes, we had good times @ the 20C. Hardware is a gay bar. Night time entertainment is a drag queen show. Doesn’t compare to Splash or Stella’s. Have you been to Atlas Social (close to Hardware)? Adonis used to have one night of dancers there. Not sure if they still do. Mike, a former Splash bartender works there. If a NYC bar opens like Splash, Stella’s, or 20C, I’ll let you know. Hope all is well. Coop

@Hoover42. NYC has so many gay bars. I still miss the very popular Splash Bar & Stella’s. Now I go to Hardware in the evening time slot. Have become friendly with the bartender & met some very nice patrons. A few drinks & most people become talkative. Yes, my friend & I are probably among the oldest there but I’ve never felt invisible or uncomfortable. Next time you’re in NYC let me know & will go for a drink.

The Broadway trailer from Hadestown.
-
Hadestown It won 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical. IMO, all well deserved as it's the best musical I've seen this season. It has a very talented and youthful cast. The singing, dancing, & acting are done to perfection. The songs are written like poetry telling this wonderful love story. Congratulations to Andre De Shields (Hermes) and Amber Gray (Persephone) for winning their Tony's. In addition, I thought the roles of Orpheus (Reeve Carney) and Eurydice (Eva Noblezada) were outstanding. Carney has such a range with his voice and is a very likeable and lovable character. Hades, played by Patrick Page, has one of the deepest voices now on Broadway. The orchestra is on the stage and dressed in costume. They are great! What the show Hamilton did to make American History relevant to modern day, Hadestown does for Greek Mythology. A suggestion: it would be helpful to read a synopsis of the show before seeing it. It's an easy way to refresh your memory on Greek Mythology. However, the show does a thorough job in explaining their role. This is the type of musical you'll want to see more than once. Cooper

@g56whiz: My father had his spleen removed after it was accidentally cut during surgery. He lived 40 years after having it removed. Never had any issues... Hope all goes well. Keep us posted.

Posting his phone number would be sharing personal information which is a TOS violation. Are you sure you wanted to post his first name? Cooper

Message from the Moderator: You have already started a thread in the Lounge called, “I Love a Good Pun”, and another in the Comedy/Tragedy Forum called, “These Just Make me Smile”. No reason to start another.

@Jamesp. Great topic & fun to read replies. My awkward moment was also an extremely embarrassing one. When getting a massage at Hero there’s a knock on the door & 2 plain clothed cops enter. They were being raided. One took the masseur out & the other (rookie) tells me to stand up. Well, I was literally caught with my pants down & at full attention. After a few more cops looked in I was told to get dressed & wait outside. No questions were asked of me & no info was taken. As a result, Hero was closed for a brief time. Thankfully, no hidden cameras or Robert Kraft like treatment.

The NY POST had its own theory. Very interesting. https://nypost.com/2019/05/05/how-game-of-thrones-just-set-up-sansa-to-take-out-cersei/?utm_campaign=iosapp&utm_source=mail_app

IMO, after watching last night’s episode, I think Cersei will meet her death by being beheaded as revenge for Missandei. Or, just being strapped to the dragon & flying off into the sunset.

@WilliamM. I’m with you on this one. A very funny musical. Good acting, singing, & dancing. Liked that it’s been updated from the movie to address the current times. Very likable cast & the joke about how River Dancing got started was a real hoot. It received 11 Tony nominations. I did like Tootsie better than The Prom. Today was the shows 1st Wednesday matinee & it was a full house.
-
Had Mike @ TSS. Young looking Asian who put his heart & soul into giving me a relaxing massage. It was my 1st experience in having the masseur hop on my butt & ride me while giving me a back massage. Different & felt good... Speaks little English, so, very quiet. The room I had was clean, small, & in the rear. It had a shower. Spa seemed busy. I’ve always found the masseurs to be polite & friendly. I go to TSS because of its closeness to the theater district. Easy walk from Tootsie to the Spa.

I, too, agree on both shows. Hope they return for a 2nd season. Very likable cast.
