I don't know how many states have a re-test policy. I've renewed my license by mail every year since I first got it at 16, without taking another test, either written or road test. In Michigan, I believe that's the case no matter your age unless someone deliberately flags you for re-testing; there's a process for that.

Miss Manners covers this with regard to etiquette. She's often written about being distressed by people's perception of her as the etiquette police, ready to pounce on someone using the wrong fork. She fully supports the concept that unsolicited corrections/advice is one of the biggest etiquette violations, and she only offers advice to those who ask her for it. I notice grammar/spelling mistakes all the time, but I rarely (I hope) point them out to people unless I'm sure they want to know. Others may view me differently :-?
