Today’s Globe & Mail reports that 21 new cases of mpox have been reported in Toronto since the start of 2024 compared to only 27 in all of last year. Only 2 of these involved international travel. Again men who have sex with men are the ones contracting the disease. Health officials said only 16 percent of those who got vaccinated in 2022 received a second dose. Two vaccinations 28 days apart was the recommended dosage. There have been smaller outbreaks in Ottawa and New York but less so in Montreal. I tried reading that book years ago but frankly the topic didn’t grab me. I read the beginning chapters and the last chapter. I saw a bit of the film on TV but turned it off. I read somewhere Capote was never the same after the experience of writing the book. He also was quite involved in the making of the film I understand.

I was there only a decade after the collapse of Communism. Rich Russians were in strong evidence in Carlsbad where we went for the day. In Prague we stayed in a small luxurious hotel, more like a large lodge set in a leafy suburb. When we went downtown it was by chauffeured car to specific spots so did’t get a real feel for the layout of the town. But I have vidid recollections of many beautiful spots on both sides of the river that cuts the town in half, between what they called the new part and the old. Haha, they were both pretty old. We took a little water taxi on the river. Some very nice restaurants which I wouldn’t necessarily have eaten in except my two older American friends only wanted to patronize 5 star establishments.
