During this pandemic, people have been caught in places where they could not return to their own countries even though their countries would have permitted them entry If they could have arrived at the border. But here, no Canadian resident is prevented from returning home if they have travelled abroad, including the US, during this border shutdown which has been in effect since March. The Canadian government has made certain alterations to the ban Including family situations but the rule remains if you come back, and no-one is going to stop you, you must self isolate for 14 days.

There is nothing preventing travellers, including Canadian residents, from flying to the US right now and it has been that way since the land border was closed in March. This loophole was not explained by the government here at the time so we all thought only essential workers could travel to the States. The problem is when you come back to Canada, as most would want to if they live here, is that on your return you have to self isolate for 14 days. And they are stepping up checking on people who return to ensure they are complying with the quarantine. There are hefty fines for not doing so but apparently not many have been handed down.
