I have been to Montreal for four short-ish trips this year and have always had a wonderful time.... I am sure you will too - From NYC I did the trips by car, which was cool except for the fact that Montreal is itself not a car-friendly city - it does have wonderful public transportation and is very walkable. I stayed both in the Village area and in the Plateau, and actually preferred the latter - much more of a local feeling, better food and shopping choices, and just a general all over nicer feeling.
