Does the Australian government subsidize Opera Australia in any way? The Met Opera apparently gets very little money from our government; it relies on the generosity of wealthy benefactors. I read once that if the Met were to sell out every performance it would still only generate 50% of the annual budget. The other 50% has to come from other sources. The other problem is a lack of star singers willing to come to the USA. If Cecilia Bartoli, Bryn Terfel, or Jonas Kaufman were on the Met roster it would be easier to sell tickets.

We have a lot to be thankful for. it was Richard Bonynge, who was a pianist by training not a professional voice teacher, who discovered the full potential of his wife's voice. That says a lot about the profession of voice teachers. I recently purchased Mr. Bonynge's book on Chalet Monet and it is full of wonderful photos. I would take Gianna Rolandi over Dessay or Damrau any day ... and I heard all three of them sing live on many occasions. Rolandi took over the Beverly Sills roles at NY City Opera once Ruth Welting and June Anderson had left the company.
