When I lived in NYC, I stopped going out to gay bars more or less around the time I turned 30. I just didn't enjoy myself, plus people were still allowed to smoke on bars then. I very rarely went when I moved to DC a few years later.

My experience exactly! I saw Andy 3 or so years ago, and mechanical is the first word that comes to mind. He was very nice, and looked like his photos, but once was enough.

Not the first. I remember a review several years ago for a now retired escort. Unfortunately I can't remember his name, but that particular review was discussed here.
