John Travolta slated to play Edna Turnbladt!C'mon-that just makes no sense at all!

(although I love the idea of Q.Latifah as Motormouth!)

JOHN TRAVOLTA and QUEEN LATIFAH have just signed on to star in the musical 'Hairspray,' a big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway stage show, according to Daily Variety. Travolta will play housewife Edna Turnblad and Latifah will portray Motormouth Maybelle, a civil rights activist and dance show host. The search is now on to find an actress for the lead character, chubby teen Tracy Turnblad. Production is scheduled to begin this fall in Baltimore and Toronto with director ADAM SHANKMAN ('Bringing Down the House') at the helm. The picture is set for a summer 2007 release.

I'm with ya, but I also remember having the same reaction when Richard Gere was cast as Billy Flynn. ;-)

 

Remember, Travolta got his start as a Broadway chorus boy. He might have the chops to pull it off. (I *pray* he does!)

I'm sorry, but people can say as many good things and try and say Travolta has the "background" to pull it off.

 

But this role was originally played by the one and only DIVINE!! Sorry! But Travolta can not TOUCH that role! I could rattle off a few queens (Sweetie, Mimi Imfurst and perhaps Lady Bunny) that might be able to hold a dimly lit candle to the role, but he is far from one of them!

The think that would piss off Tommy boy is the fact that they didn't approach him.

This is like when they put Michelle Pfeiffer in the film version of Frankie and Johnny in the role originated by Kathy Bates. It was directed by Garry ("Pretty Woman" "The Flamingo Kid") Marshall, who alas failed at making a substantial love story. Edie Falco did a credible job on Broadway a couple of years ago.

 

Considering Travoltra's recent track reocrd, I don't know why they didn't just take a chance on Harvey snyway and just rely on a strong name supporting cast. Latfiah's a good start there.

Zipper..Any Guy who can "Park a Jet" in his front yard, could be considered somewhat of a Genius!

 

Some of his Movies well that's another story. But he like some other Movie Star's, is from the "They Pay I Go" School of Acting..He never claimed to be Johnny Depp. LOL :7
