I was listening to Johnny Weir, the top US figure skater at the olympics. Is he gay? For me, that's a no-brainer. Supposedly, over half of the male solo skaters are gay. Some are obvious. Some not so obvious. To my knowledge, the only skater ever to come out while still actively skating, is Rudy Galindo, known for his flamboyance. Good for him! That wasn't easy.

Anyone who's ever been to a figure skating event knows that the largest fan club of the male skaters consists of screeching shrieking teenage girls who rival those at a rock concert. I once had some behind me who were screaming so loud, they hurt my ears. So coming out in the skating world is a no no. It could be the kiss of death for your career. It's a shame that the stuffy fuddy duddies who control skating competition are a big obstacle. Guess they don't know what they would do without the screaming female teens. Of course, that's not the only factor. But it's all about maintaining a certain image, and the skaters seem to go along with it.

Wonder what the skaters do after hours. Discreet encounters at the Olympic Village?

Personally, I liked Ilya Kulik, who won the gold some years ago and ended up marrying Ekaterina Goreeva a few years after the tragic death of her husband and skating partner, Sergei Grinkov. They were one of the greatest pairs of all time. But I digress.

Anyone have any thoughts about any of this?

For some reason I wasn't familiar with the male figure skaters for this Olympics, so after reading your post I did a Google search. I agree, Johnny is a "hottie" and apparently quite flamboyant. His nickname is "Tinkerbell", his mom is his best friend, and he likes feather boas which he calls scarves. But, as you said, no where does he say that he is gay. Interesting.

I also ran across another hot skater - Evan Lysacek. Wow! I guess I will have to start tuning in to the Olympics on TV.

Most figure skaters are well worth watching as they all seem to have the most incredible butts. It's a toss up as to which is better...

Skaters butt or swimmers butt. Re the latter, you usually get to see more of it!

Johnny Weir is not gay; he is a girl! I just finished watching a short presentation of him and he is definitely what Arnold would call "a girlie man". Some guys do like effeminate, young men, so if it works for you, go for it. I would much rather watch Apolo Anton Ohno...

In the 1970s both John Currie (English) and Toller Cranston (Canadian) were openly gay. As are both Brians (Orser--he had an unpleasant gay palimony case--and Boitano), and the two top Canadian skaters at this Olympic. It's best to assume that all male figure skaters are gay unless proven otherwise.

As long as he is male and has a cock, he is a man.

Comments like yours, only feed the homophobes. Please, don't gays get enough shit from the rest of the world? Do we really need to attack ourselves now?

Does that mean that Jeffrey Buttle, the Canadian skater is gay? If so, ALRIGHT!!!!!, as I just saw his short program. What an adorable, beautiful young man, with a smile so bright, it would melt the polar ice caps. And skating to American Jazz Scat music, just awesome! He definitely gets my vote!

Unfortunately, I'm not a judge, and lust, at least not officially, doesn't figure into the scoring. :7

My predictions:

Gold - Plushenko (Russia)

Silver - Lambiel (Switzerland)

Bronze - Weir (U.S.A.)

With cute speed skaters like the ones that I found pics of from Poland (Artur Was, Maciej Ustynowicz, Jan Hessel Boermans), I have to say that I don't blame those screaming girls :+

You never can tell. Many of the judges are themselves former skaters. The roots on this family tree run deep. }(

Like I said, "Some guys do like effeminate, young men, so if it works for you, go for it. I would much rather watch Apolo Anton Ohno" or something like that... It's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

It's interesting that all of those who are either openly gay or have been outed seem to be British, Canadian, or American. You don't hear much about gay skaters from any of the eastern European or Asian countries, or even other countries that regularly feature world class skaters, like France and Italy. Comments?

I've finally seen Buttle's short program.

What a cutie! And he really has a fabulous presence on the ice. Graceful, controlled ... but couldn't stick all his landings.

That little move at the end, at the judges' podium, which showed so much personality would have been a big scorer if the rest of his routine was clean.

Come to papa, baby. Let me kiss it and make it feel better. }(

Brian Boitano has always denied it. But we know better.

I don't think we can say all figure skaters are gay. I have followed skating for years, and there are those whom I believe are str8. I don't think we should assume that all figure skaters are gay any more than any other creative profession. Certainly, a large proportion are gay. I once heard back in the late 90s that HIV had hit the Canadian skaters hard. Don't know if it's true because if any were lost due to the illness, it wasn't one of the top olympic skaters.

Cock = man? NOT!

"As long as he is male and has a cock, he is a man. Comments like yours, only feed the homophobes."

Oh puhhleeeze! Let's trap that yap, Hawk. You just slapped several thousand pre-op trannies in their cheek-implanted faces and they're a comin' for ya.

Show me a sissy-Mary-queen and I'll show you a cock that wishes it was a pussy. In my book, it takes much more than dick to define a man.

Johnny Weir may have that Clay Aiken, girly-thang goin' on but he's smart, funny, and a major talent: my hard cock tends to respond to such qualities. Weir's "look" ain't callin' out my name but he's a lot more butch than many of the Giselle-queens who work in fashion. Now, those guys definitely ARE girls.

AIDS' Victim

Tristan,

Rob McCall, partner of Tracy Wilson (now reporting for NBC) in ice dancing and seven time national champion of Canada and bronze medalist at the Calgary Olympics, died of AIDS in 1991. Tracy and Rob's mother organized a memorial service and it was publicly noted that he died of AIDS. He and Tracy were one of the most enjoyable couples to watch with wonderful routines year after year. I don't know of other Canadians with AIDS.

RE: AIDS' Victim

Karl, thanks for the input. I wasn't aware of that. The reason we may not have heard about other Canadians is because they were lesser known. I had read that AIDs had hit the Canadian team hard in a article written by someone who knows the figure skating world well. I don't remember the writer or paper. It makes sense if skaters are lesser known, and from Canada, we would tend not to hear about it. I don't think they'd broadcast it during a figure skating event. In any case, let's hope all those gay skaters are playing safe now.

RE: AIDS' Victim

About 90% of the most successful figure skaters in recent

years are most definitely not gay. For instance, Scott

Hamilton, Charlie Tickner, Elvis Stoyko, Kirk Browning,

Todd Eldridge, Viktor Petrenko, Petr Barna, Paul Wylie,

Alexi Yagudin, Ilia Kulik, Matt Savoie, Takeshi Honda,

Philipe Candoloro, and Brian Joubert. Hard to believe, but

it's true.:(

Just to keep the fires burning a bit longer... This tidbit was on national television the other night: a reporter interviewing Johnny Weir...

Q: As for your Cristina Aguilera obsession, have you met her?

A: No. I would kill to meet her (covering his mouth with his hands and rolling his eyes).

Q: It would be great if an introduction could be arranged.

A: Yesss. Ahh..I would pee. I just think she is an incredible role

model (clapping and jumping up and down).

Yes, Johnny. Cristina is an incredible role model. And according to some, so are you for young, gay men.

Catfight on Ice....Rudy Galindo on Johnny Weir:

"He's drinking tea with his pinkie finger in the air and he is so over the top and feminine. Why is everybody asking him about his

style and not just ask him if he is gay. It's the funniest thing

to watch."

Go, Rudy!!

RE: AIDS' Toll

I once met, many years ago, a hot young figure skater on the beach in LA. A few years ago I googled him to see how his career turned out, only to find that he had died of AIDS at 34. Tragedies, all of them.
