The first race of the Triple Crown is tomorrow. Any fans of the ponies? I'm not into sports but I can tolerate one that only lasts a few minutes.

Anyone going to watch?

Anyone been to a horse race?

Mustn't forget the official drink

I’m a big fan and will be watching. Haven’t made my “pick” yet. Today, Friday is a also big day of racing at Churchill Down in anticipation of Saturday’s big event.

I’ve been to the Kentucky Derby once, in 1992. Lil E. Tee beat an overwhelmingly popular and overbet Arazi. Due to the nature of parimutuel betting....the prices were huge with Arazi out of the money, I won something on the place horse (second) paid like $50 for $2 ticket, I believe it was a California horse named Casual Lies.

I attend the race track live in Del Mar, CA during the summer and fall....sometimes visit Santa Anita. Online wagering and live races on TV and streaming have made going to the racetrack strictly a social event....I can watch and wager on horse races literally world wide from my TV, iPhone, iPad, etc.

I used to go to the track a lot, but not for years now.

Now when I think of the Derby, it reminds me of three years ago. I was watching it at the hotel bar before I went up to a room to meet a guy for my first erotic massage (still had not hired an escort yet).

Let us know if you see a former Miss America, who was also First Lady of Kentucky at one time is in attendance.

I only plan to watch the race itself not any of the hoopla before and after.

I live not far from Churchill Downs but, if you're a Louisvillian, you're more likely to attend "The Oaks" (for girl horses) than the Derby, as the Derby is mostly for wealthy out-of-towners. The Oaks is held the day before Derby (today). I usually go to the track at least once during the Spring meet as well as Keeneland in Lexington. Keeneland is a much prettier race track and more amenable to getting up close to the ponies in the paddock before the race. I like to bet on the horses that appear cool and calm in the paddock before the race, as well as their stats. The best part of going to the track is "people watching" as well as trying to turn a $2 wager into a $20 payoff.

Favorites for Derby are Justify and Audible. Bolt d'Oro will be in the running, too. Long shot: Good Magic.

Phyllis George hasn't been in local news since Reagan was president and lives in Georgia. Former Miss America (1999) Heather French Henry is married to the former Lt. Governor and is currently prominent in local diet commercials. Former Louisvillian Diane Sawyer, a America Junior Miss winner, swoops in and out occasionally.

I don't like mint juleps. Too minty and the leaves get in your teeth.

all I can add to this thread is that I was in Louisville the day before the Derby in 1987 while on a cross-country vacation/road trip.....certainly wanted to see Churchill Downs while in town, so I did.....did a quick drive-by and was surprised at how tight the complex is squeezed into that older neighborhood (but I presume it was on the edge of town before houses appeared nearby when built??).....I guess it was "Oaks" day, according to @JayCeeKy 's post above.....neighbors were selling parking spaces for high prices and it was pretty busy......not liking crowds, I moved on after seeing the famous Downs

Wagering in the Derby is perilous because a horse, to be entered into the field, is already a great horse with a great pedigree. Every horse in the Derby is capable of winning. That's why "long shots" usually end up winning. If you are going to wager, go with a long shot. That's the only way to make any money.

Favorites have won the Derby the last five years in a row, no long shots. The “favorites never win the Kentucky Derby” is an adage that hasn’t been proven out recently.

I never heard the adage "favorites never win the Kentucky Derby." That would be a stupid thing to say. But remember that from 1980-1999 NOT ONE FAVORITE won the Derby.

I'm thinking Bolt d'Oro by a nose.
