On the radio they were discussing several recent shootings. The heterosexual men were disgruntled because of their unwanted enforced celibacy. The show was saying that 20% of the men were having sex with 80% of the women. And these celibate men were blaming the women.

Not sure if you were making a point or citing a statistic from talk radio? I'm assuming this is single men and single women they're talking about. Probably 50% of the 80% of single men that are left with only 20% of the 80% of women through 45% of their lives (say 18-60) are 80% jealous and 20% resentful. Plus or minus 5%, 95 times out of a hundred, depending on sample size.

Thank-you for clarifying my post. I think they were making some point with their stats. One person suggested these men go to the gym and get better clothes.

the radio discussion you were listening to no doubt mentioned the recent van attack in Toronto....it's been suggested the driver suffered from "incel" - involuntary celibacy and blamed women.....had never heard of this "affliction" before the Toronto attack.....

This is related to the incident in Toronto. The terrorist who killed all those people with his van is part of an online community called “in cel” - involuntarily celibate.

This group traces its history back to a 2014 shooting in California. The perpetrator blamed women who would not have sex with him as the reason for his rampage.

The group has several chat rooms and operates in the dark corners of the internet.

The Toronto nut case purposely targeted women in his attack.

Some guy who wasn't getting laid just learned about Pareto's principle.

Oh, it's been around for awhile. Elliott Rodger of Santa Clara fame - the 2014 murders mentioned above - spouted the same ideology and killed because of it.

They're sick and so is their misogynist ideology, under which women owe them sex.

Oh yeah, incels have been around for a while. They're insane. The term was mostly limited to specific sections of the internet, but with the Toronto attack and the rise of the alt-right and other proponents of online misogyny, it's entered more prominently into the national dialogue.

If anyone needs information on this concept, NPR did a very informative and concise piece on this subject in response to the Toronto attack. As others have mentioned, Elliot Rodger (the 2014 Santa Barbara shooter) is probably the most prominent incel, who publicly posted about his contempt for women, especially those in interracial couples. There's a lot of overlap between incels and the alt-right.

Isn't escorting legal in Canada? Why can't he hire?

My reading of the situation ... Involuntarily celibate is one of two things, unable to meet a suitable partner and reconciled to it, and unable to get laid and blaming the entire world for their inability to do so. This mob of losers, the 'incels' are entitled misogynists who think they own women and blame them (and those men who are successful in meeting women) for their own inability to find a partner and think it is some global conspiracy. They wouldn't hire because they think they are entitled to it free, and as Dan Savage noted in his article about it, why should female sex workers be expected to be the buffer between society and these dysfunctional and likely violent men. The first type of people unable to find a partner could and would hire if they could overcome their embarrassment and fears to do so.
