Chelsea brothel?

When I was living in Chelsea during the 1970s (gay enough then, but not yet "Boys Town") rumors persisted of a gay brothel in a townhouse on the 400 block of West 24th Street. Some guys I knew even claimed they spotted the boys sunning on the roof of the place.

Anyone know if there was any truth to these tales?

My first hiring experience in the 1970s was from an agency that operated an in-house service on West 16th St. in Chelsea. When one entered, there was a receptionist at a desk, and in the next room were couches with boys lounging, waiting for business, which took place in a couple of bedrooms. That sounds like a bordello to me.

Sounds like one to me, too. How hot were the guys? Did you run into Chelseaite Tony Perkins there? Legend goes he liked the rentboys.

I am flabbergasted that you would throw in the question about Tony Perkins maybe going to this Chelsea brothel. It strays so far from your original question and is so gratuitous that I wonder what the purpose was in asking. Is you thread about the brothel or a roundabout way to bring Walter Winchell back to life?

Tony was a Chelsea guy. According to a published biography, not written by Walter Winchell, the actor engaged rentboys. It's hardly "gratuitous" or straying far from my original question to wonder if anyone ever spotted him or any one else at this or any other establishment.

It's just a casual observation or question on a relaxed morning. Let me know when you'll be reading again. I'll wear a shirt and tie.

When I saw Tony at the brothel, he was wearing just that!!!At least I think it was him...I was in the shower at the time...:)

I found them about as hot as the girls in a cheap brothel in Tijuana. The manager sent out for someone for me; he arrived about a half hour later, and was better than the boys on the couches, but not much better.

There was a great house o' boys in San Francisco at an apartment on Market at 8th st.Beautiful guys that also worked for a very interesting gay restaurant(same owner)

Also one in a Senior Citizen home On Eddy and Polk! That was a publicly funded housing and the fella living there was just scandelous! He owned all of these old Lincon cars-parked on the street(all had handicapped placcards)he also published a NAMBLA news letter. The boys there were really skanky crack ho's.

I thought Lankypeters was referring to London Terrace at first, but he said it was in a townhouse, and those would be on the north side of the block (LT is on the south side).

This reply and the earlier one I defintely think would be a good illustration of the what the British mean when they say someone or their remarks "are too cute by half" or something like that.

The observation about Tony Perkins, I thought was interesting based on his past, his connection to that neighborhood and the Hollywood gay concerns that forced actors to remain in the closet publicly.

Yes, I was referring to the townhouses and brownstones across from London Terrace. A boy/fuckbuddy from London Terrace told me he sighted the rentboys sunning themselves on the roof of one of the townhouses. He also said Robert Redford visited the establishment on his visits to NYC. Dream on, dream on. (I hope I'm not violating the focus of this thread by introducing yet another famous name. I don't want to gast anyone's flabber.)

You certainly didn't have to pay to get laid in London Terrace, and you probably still don't. All you had to do was head for the swimming pool or the roof deck where you found pussy galore.

I wonder what the Americans would say about the remarks. I'll leave it to Mr. Munroe, our resident wit and cultural observer.

I am flabbergasted that I got so excited as to post the above. Looking back at it, I should have left it be. If lankypeters wants to change the course of a thread he started, who am I to complain? Sorry!

Well I still don't think I changed the path of the thread all that much....but how I wish there I knew more people who could smooth things over as here. No "Sorry" necessary.
