I've explored much of old route 66, but mostly from NM westward only.....very much into old roads and historic routes....have never done an organized tour of it

there is a very, very wide variety of remains of the old road between Chicago and Santa Monica....ranging from the classic crumbling asphalt heading off toward the horizon...to being a dull frontage road for the adjacent interstate.....to being completely swallowed up by the current alignment of the interstate which replaced it in sections.....the interstate "business route" thru the towns is usually the route of old 66 (the main street in town - usually easy to figure out before the interstate around town was built) and these roads often have great photo ops for the old businesses and/or buildings.....old tourist courts, gas stations, diners, motels, gift shops remain in various conditions along these in-town sections.....

depending on your interest, it can be done in a few days from Chicago to the Pacific...or can take weeks if you try to find every last section and take lots of pictures along the way......also, the road was always being realigned and rerouted thru the decades, so there are often multiple alignments to explore in the same stretch......some cheesy tourist attractions mixed in with the real stuff

lots of books and online resources.....maps, guides, tour options.....

I would have thought driving the full length of Route 66 was worth it just for the bragging rights.

A wildly tangential aside. The captain of the England cricket team is Joe Root. In test cricket (the really serious version) players wear white shirts and trousers. In the less serious one day and twenty over versions, players wear coloured clothes and have their names and a number on their backs. Root is not the captain in the shorter versions of the game, but he was in the team for one series here this summer. In those games he chose the number 66 for his shirt. It took a while for the penny to drop, but there he was with

Root

on his back.
