Is it a career for life or just a means to end to pay for school etc.?

I see that some escorts have been doing it for 10, 20 or more years.

I know a few who have used porn and/or escorting to pay for nursing/medical school. Two of which have retired from the sex industry and are working in the medical field. The other still escorts for now, but is close to being done schooling. He will probably quit escorting or severely pull back from it.

There are some who truly enjoy sex work and do it for as long as they can. I can’t say it’s a means to an end for them, but they seem to plan on doing it until they can’t anymore.

Are you considering becoming an "escort" Avalon ???

For me, it's a career. If sessions with clients cease to pay the bills then consulting about related industry skills will fill in the balance. I see plenty of older escorts achieving enough success that I'm not too worried about what happens later tho.

For me, I wouldn't say it's a career but I sure as heck do enjoy what I do and I hope that it shows with those that I've had the pleasure to meet over the years. I do have a day job though. I like stability and knowing I'm going to have a pay check at the end of the week. So maybe I guess I do this as a hobby?

Hugs,

Grindr is a hobby. Escorting is not:

If you look at musicians and actors, both do it for a very long time (and invest considerable time in study, training and practice), because they are driven to do it. Most individuals in each group hope eventually to make a significant portion of their income from it. However, stasticially, less than 50% of each group is able to do that. I think there are a greater of fraction whose income is primarily music related - via teaching, etc, than for actors. But I don't think that any of would regard hard working, determined, and aspiring actors as hobbyists before they make the big time.

Even among musicians, there is a current prominent pianist, Jon Nakamatsu who made his living teaching *high school german* before winning the Tchaikovsky competition.

The IRS has something to say about the phrase "drives monetary benefit from it". If you engage in an actitivity and do not make a profit in >= 3 out of 5 years on a sliding window of reckoning, then the IRS says they will treat your activity as a hobby rather than a business.

While I don't consider escorting a career I have been doing it for quite a while. I started escorting back in college to help pay for college and now escorting is helping pay for grad school. I guess for me it's sort of a means to end but with that said I do enjoy it.

Many professional athletes have relatively short "careers" because their athletic prime doesn't last beyond their 30s, but they stay involved in their sports in other ways, such as in coaching or managing. This thread made me wonder whether great escorts might extend their careers in the same way. A smart neophyte escort might do well by hiring Kevin Slater to coach him to a top ranking in the escort profession.

I've started to feel guilty in that I may be preying on someone in a difficult situation for my own pleasure....

This concern has come up before and I certainly would not want to exploit someone in a bad situation. However if they are an adult in the US and don’t have emotional or mental problems that preclude them from getting other employment then I don’t see how it’s anything other than their free choice. I worked as a waiter while in grad school - that at times felt like exploitation! - but of course nothing like what happens in some parts of the world.

I've had this discussion with a few of the escorts who have become regulars of mine. Some used escorting to move on or pay for the career path i.e nursing real estate etc. Some were are pretty famous and branded their names for licensing purposes. There were or are times where I've been envious of the escort from a standpoint of excitement and pleasure versus my life which has always been in the corporate world. Oddly enough some escorts were envious of my choices. For those men who have provided me with great pleasure great company and the ability to make me feel great I thank you. Your services are extraordinary. As with anything in life invest ones money wisely so that if you do move on from escorting you have the ability to move on wisely.

I admire the ones who truly have their act together. Who have chosen to live their lives on their own terms and couldn't care less what others think of the choices they've made. It takes guts.

Absolutely a career. Always setting finically goals and creating business plans. I will escort as long as I can while using my money to create other successful business ventures along side. I will work until I can't anymore and by that time all my money will already be working for me.

I put a lot of work into escorting - I learn skills to refine my ability to provide a better service, I network with people and keep in touch with them, I run my own advertising and my own books. I run a porn company as well which is a whole other world of work. It is my career. It may not always be my only career and it may not be my career forever, but its a job I put an incredible about of intentional effort into.

I've been escorting for ten years now and I love what I do. I didn't enter the profession because I needed money but too long to explaion how it happened. Met some fabulous people over the years, and had my share of not so fabulous, but that's the way of things. What I will say is that the profession has looked after me and allowed me to live comfortably.
