Desperate to avoid a winner-take-all Game 5 in this American League Division Series, the Houston Astros asked ace Justin Verlander to do something Monday that he hadn't done as a professional or in college.

It didn't work out well.

With the Astros leading by one run and trying to close out the Boston Red Sox in the best-of-five series, Verlander warmed up in the bullpen and made the first relief appearance of his career with one out and a runner on first base in the fifth inning. The first batter he faced, Red Sox rookieAndrew Benintendi, belted a two-run homer to right field to swing the score -- and perhaps the series -- in Boston's favor and prompt taunts of "Jus-tin! Jus-tin!" from the crowd at Fenway Park.

Regardless of the outcome, the move was bound to bring scrutiny upon Astros manager A.J. Hinch. Verlander was the winning pitcher in Game 1 and was lined up to start Game 5, if necessary, Wednesday night in Houston. Asking the 34-year-old right-hander to do something he hasn't done in 402 major league appearances (including postseason), 22 minor league outings and 42 games in college at Old Dominion will likely be perceived as a panic move by Hinch.

The Red Sox also made unconventional moves with their bullpen, bringing in ace Chris Sale in relief of starter Rick Porcello in the top of the fourth inning. But Sale has extensive experience as a reliever, having started his major league career in the bullpen with the Chicago White Sox in 2010 and 2011. Also, with the Red Sox on the brink of elimination, they had to be more concerned with winning Game 4 than planning for a potential Game 5.

Fortunately, it all worked out in the end, as Verlander shut down the Sox through the end of the seventh inning, helping the Astros to eliminate the Bosox:p:D:), proving once again that Big Pappy let down the organization and the fans when he failed to pass on his PED dealer's name to the next generation of Red Sox sluggers(???) after his retirement.;):rolleyes:

Kate's fiance will attempt to pitch the Astros to their (and his) first World Championship Tuesday night.

I have no idea who either of these people are-I thought she might have been one of Prince Harry’s former girlfriends. But if I’m to assume the guy in this picture is a baseball player, he doesn’t look to be in that great a shape.

Am I the only one here who had no idea who Kate Upton is? I'm still not really sure...

Super-model, who earns almost as much as her $28million/yr fiance.

BTW, before Verlander was traded to the Astros, his teammate with Detroit was Justin Upton, so if Kate & Verlander married, there would have been two Justin Uptons on Detroit... and the other one's cuter:

Kate Upton and Justin Verlander didn’t just want a wedding in Italy, they wanted a true experience.

“It was really important to Justin and me that it feel like we were on vacation with our closest friends and family,” Upton told Vogue. “We set up an entire afternoon dedicated to interactive games, which we called the Uplander Olympics.”

Guests participated in a “ping-pong tournament, cornhole, a football toss, relay races, and an epic water balloon fight” ahead of the couple’s rehearsal dinner that evening, where they requested guests wear red. Upton donned a red Valentino gown while Verlander sported a custom-made red tuxedo jacket. The next day, the ceremony and reception took place at the Rosewood Castiglion Del Bosco resort.

“We found a beautiful corner of paradise that Tuscany Flowers helped transform into our ‘secret garden,’” Upton shared. “It was the first time the property had ever held a ceremony in this location.”

Upton kept with Valentino when designing her ceremony dress because it’s “the best at creating delicate, beautiful lace and details, and their Italian heritage kept the fashion and feel authentic to our venue,” she said.

During the reception, which took place in a greenhouse custom built for the couple, Upton ditched the conservative gown and opted for a sheer number, designed by Christy Rilling Studio.

“I wanted a dress that I could have fun in,” she shared, “but that still brought the glamour.”

Their first dance was set to Michael Bublé‘s “Everything.”

Facially he looks a bit like @Mikegaite . Physique-wise, Mike has more muscle.

Mike definitely has a more defined body, but although reviews prove that Mr. Gaite does pitch at times, my fondest thoughts of him when we get together are how excellent he is as a catcher with me!!! No matter how hard I throw it to him, he never fails to ride it to a win!:D:);)

...and he tastes delicious!!!

Yes, @Mikegaite always caught for me too. In this picture he doesn’t look like he’s quite sure whether he likes Luke down there.

I'm not saying they're fake but I'd like to see them in a prior incarnation (not as a minor, thank you).

Waiter charges Astros' Justin Verlander $1 million for 'Dodger Killer'

Hefty price tags in Beverly Hills are nothing new, but Houston Astrospitcher Justin Verlander got a surprise when his lunch bill came to more than $1 million on Friday.

The bill from the waiter at the Cabana Cafe at the Beverly Hills Hotel included $30 pancakes, a $42 salad and ... $1 million for "Dodger Killer."

Former tennis player Mardy Fish, who dined with Verlander, also posted a picture of the $1,095,198.20 receipt, saying he picked up the tip.

Verlander and the Astros won the 2017 World Series, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in a deciding Game 7 for the team's first championship.

The AL West-leading Astros are visiting the Los Angeles Angels for a three-game series. Verlander, who is 12-8 with a 2.65 ERA and 223 strikeouts this season, is scheduled to pitch in Saturday's game.

Verlander, who is making $28 million this season, has only faced the Dodgers three times during the regular season over his career, going 3-0 with a 2.91 ERA and 27 strikeouts. He appeared in two games during last year's World Series against the Dodgers, going 0-1 while giving up five runs in 12 innings with 14 strikeouts.
