This was a project of the Canadian government in the 1950s and 1960s to root out homosexuals from the government.

gee, and I thought Canada was supposed to be the famously ultimate example of a progressive, tolerant, modern country!

With McCarthyism right next door and their own British roots and influence, they couldn't help themselves and the seedy underside of their human nature to persecute us. The Brits were famous for harassing, punishing, flogging and imprisoning gays. The last public hanging of a gay man in England was in 1825. Couple of blokes met their maker that day, while all the rest in line for the gallows were pardoned. Somehow the Brits gave up that nasty habit. Perhaps deep inside they knew how shameful it was. Thomas Jefferson proposed removing that piece of English common law in Virginia, replacing the execution of gay men accused of doing it, instead to cut their nuts off seemed more reasonable.

I grew up in upstate New York, in close proximity to the border. We went to Canada for one reason or another pretty regularly. I remember, even as a little kid, in the 50s, how quaint and old-fashioned Canada seemed, compared to the US.

I went to Canada in the late 70's because I could drink there at 19, rather than at 21 in Michigan.

 

Later on, I went to Canada because the stripper boys could get fully nude, and hard.

There's a science fiction novel by Larry Niven with a character whose very mild telekinetic abilities let him dilate or contract someones pupils - contracting made a person so uninterested in him that he was essentially invisible to them. I can see the dilation response in my dog when I'm having dinner and she's watching - her pupils are ENORMOUS.

Well, Roy Moore may be back in power in Alabama in the near future so I'm sure there will be some sort of vile bill in the Senate soon. I guess we may get to see John McCain be able to do another "thumbs down" to killing gays.

Back in the 50s my lesbian aunt and her partner applied for jobs at a Canadian military depot. They were investigated by the RCMP and neighbors questioned about their situation. Since they had nothing to hide and not subject to blackmail they were hired and worked there for many years. The whole issue of homosexuality is a non issue now in Canada as it is or should be everywhere.
