Rio has some of the best sex clubs in the world. PV finally has one now, which I've never been in.

 

For all kinds of reasons, I prefer PV. Easier to navigate, Gay friendly, smaller, walkable, great food, hot guys, stripper clubs, great beaches, great people.

And I've only been to Rio once, over a decade ago.

Rio is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with a lively music scene in small clubs throughout the city. I have seen Joao Gilberto several times and earlier the great Baden Powell. Yes, it's more difficult because its a major city, but the challenge is part of the charm

 

My first time in Brazil in 1974 I also flew to Brasilia for several days. I flew back to the states from Brasilia during the day with no clouds in the sky -- saw the Amazon and the tip of South America.

Bear in mind that both cities are tropical (PV 20N, Rio 22S) but that February is high summer in the southern hemisphere and that is the wet season. It's not rain most every day as it would be between 10N and 10S, but hotter and more humid than it would be in winter.

PV is a shorter flight....and also you don't need a visa to enter Mexico like you do for Brazil (assuming you're an American). The Brazil visa process is just a complete hassle....especially if you do not live in a city that has a Brazilian consulate.

 

Having said all that, I would have more fun in Rio (or Sao Paulo for that matter) than in PV. Also, the Brazil rentboy sauna scene can't be matched in PV. Additionally, you won't get the big muscle guys in Mexico like you see in Brazil if that happens to be your thing.

 

I agree with the others that, as a solo traveler, Probably you should try PV first. Maybe Rio the following year.

Mostly agree. if I had not traveled throughout France solo first, Brazil would have been very difficult. When I first went to Rio in '74, few people spoke English.

 

Still if you do well in Rio on your major trip outside the U.S., Russia and Eastern Europe will be fairly easy.

PV for easier to navigate hoppable club scene and all gay area beaches and bars walkable, as well as more suited to foreign-language-phobes and the young. Rio for saunas with men for hire and for travellers OK with translation media, but I assume Lounge inquiries here are not escort-oriented and that an interest in that component would be posted under Escorts South, in which some contributors here (usually older and, like me, otherwise unable to easily score) might appropriately weigh in more.

 

Rio's clubs are not centralized geographically and many have an entry fee or flat-rate bar tab predicated on spending one's time there exclusively for the evening. Older men in out-there drag with snappy Portuguese broad-humor quips garner some social attention ... otherwise, seniors are out-of-place woodwork lurkers.

 

I have been to both Mexico and Brazil extensively over the past few years. Eating and drinking out, groceries, sundries, etc are often about twice the cost in Rio compared to CDMX, Guadalajara, and PV. In contrast, street-vendor grub in both locales is price comparable. Generally, the cost of living in Rio is not as commensurate with wage realities as in Mexico.

 

Either of the two cities offers a lovely respite from cold winters. Be aware of Rio Carnival dates for planning. In 2019 it begins in March, very rare.
