The trouble is that while we have fixed ages for these transitions (16-18 for sex, 18 for voting, 21 for alcohol), there is actually a lot of variation in how people mature,

 

For most of my youth, the drinking age in Connecticut was 18. The summer after I turned 17, I was working with an adult theatre group, and we often went out for drinks after shows. So - not all things are equal. Of course, once I started college that fall, they realized it was indeed time for me to do my own thing.

 

But of course, there are still unwritten rules of decency. One night - I can't remember if this was after my junior or senior year, when I was back home for the summer - I wound up sneaking a date (around my age) home late at night. My mom was out of town, and my younger brother was at a friend's house, I think - and I knew my dad would be asleep, and that he'd be up pretty early and probably out during the morning. I had to look this up - I had never heard this term before. I think this and the related "Tea And Sympathy" rule are always good to keep in mind.
